The stainless steel bottle opener in two lines
This is the bar opener in stainless steel, 18.5 centimetres long and 4 wide: one piece, with no moving parts and nothing on the surface that can wear away.
Who it is for
For anyone opening beers all night. It is the most ordinary tool on the bar and also the most used in a venue working on beer and soft drinks: sixty, a hundred openings a night, always the same movement and always the same hand.
How a lever works, and why length counts
The hook catches the crimped edge of the crown cap and the body of the tool rests on the centre of the cap, which becomes the fulcrum: lifting the handle raises the edge of the cap, which deforms and comes away. The force comes from the distance between the fulcrum and the hand, so a long handle opens with less effort. Eighteen and a half centimetres are the compromise between the leverage you want and the bulk of a tool that sits in an apron pocket for a whole shift.

Why bare steel outlasts a finish
A stainless steel bottle opener carries nothing on its surface that can wear: no plating to dull, no paint to chip. That is why the plain model outlives the decorated ones even when it costs a third as much, and why in a busy venue it is worth keeping bare steel in the service pocket and the finished pieces for the bar on show. On a crown cap, besides, metal works against metal, and there the finish is the first thing to go.
Freestyle work
The one piece build is also why this tool gets used in freestyle: it has no joints to work loose, so it can be spun and caught without anything coming apart. Anyone practising does it with bottles kept for the purpose rather than with service glassware, but it is worth knowing the tool holds up, because an opener with moving parts starts to rattle by the third throw.
Where it lives, and how many you need
One per station, plus a spare in the drawer: that is the working rule for any bar doing beer, because the opener is the tool that goes missing most, ends up in somebody’s pocket and reappears two days later. It costs little enough to keep three, and a venue left without one halfway through a Saturday opens bottles with whatever it can find, which is the quickest way to chip a rim or mark a surface. A stainless steel bottle opener hung on a hook by the beer fridge stays put longer than one left on the counter.
Care
Dishwasher with no second thoughts: it is bare stainless steel and untroubled by the hot cycle. Worth drying to avoid limescale marks, and worth checking the hook now and then, which is the part that works: on a cheap piece it opens out slightly after a few thousand openings, and once it opens it starts sliding off the cap instead of catching it.
