The plated steel bottle opener in two lines
This is the steel bottle opener for a bar in full view, 18cm long and 5mm thick, in five finishes: black, silver, gold, copper and bronze.
Who it is for
For stations where the tools are on show and part of the look of the venue. A bare steel opener works the same, but on a bar built around one colour, whether the copper of a warm station or the black of a modern one, the tool in the hand in front of the guest is the first thing noticed.
What plating is, and how it behaves
It is a thin layer of another metal laid over the steel. It changes only the colour, not the structure: underneath is still steel, with its stiffness and strength. The point is that the layer is measured in microns, so abrasion and harsh detergents wear it. A plated opener put through the dishwasher loses its tone in a few weeks, and the first part to go is the hook, the part that touches the cap.

5mm thick, and what that means
It is thin, and you feel it in the hand: a slim tool looks elegant and is less comfortable over a long stretch, because the edge presses into the palm. Over ten bottles it makes no difference; over a hundred a night you notice it. That is why many venues keep two: the plated one for the bar, where a beer is opened now and then in front of the guest, and a thicker bare steel one for floor service and the bottle crate.
How to choose the finish
Silver is the most neutral and ages best, because the difference between the plating and the steel underneath shows least. Black is the most striking and the least forgiving: every scratch shows. Gold, copper and bronze match the main metal of the bar, and the working rule is to keep to one warm tone, because three different warm tones on the same bar top look like a mistake.
The move is always the same
Hook on the edge of the cap, body resting on the centre, handle up in one movement. Opening with wrist strength instead of leverage wears the hook quickly and now and then sends the cap where it should not go. With a thin opener, hold the bottle by the neck rather than the body with the other hand: the grip is steadier, and on a wet bottle that is the difference between a clean opening and a bottle sliding across the bar top.
Care
Hand wash in lukewarm water with mild detergent and dry straight away. Keep it away from the dishwasher, scourers and chlorine-based products, which is what keeps the plating bright. At a station where tools get a quick rinse between rounds, hang the plated opener up rather than leaving it in the bucket.
