The face shield in two lines
This is a face shield in unbreakable polypropylene covering eyes, nose and mouth, held in front of the face by a headband. It goes on over everything else and is cleaned in seconds.
Who it is for
For anyone standing behind a bar counter half a metre from guests for a whole shift. In counter service the distance cannot be stretched, because the distance is the work: you talk, you pass a glass, you take an order, and it happens dozens of times an hour. A clear screen between two faces is the only barrier that does not change how you work.
What a clear barrier does, and what it does not
It stops direct splashes: the ones from a cough, a sneeze or simply somebody talking loudly half a metre away. It does not filter the air, because it is open at the sides and underneath, so it does not replace a mask where a mask is required: the two work together, and the shield adds eye protection, which a mask does not cover. It is a distinction worth keeping clear, because it is the one most often got wrong.

Why polypropylene and not glass
A face shield gets dropped, and in a venue it gets dropped more than once a week. Polypropylene scratches but does not shatter, which is exactly what is needed where the work happens among glassware and food: a screen that breaks into a hundred pieces near the ice is a bigger problem than the one it solves.
Misting, and how to avoid it
The real nuisance is not the weight, it is the misting: warm breath rises, meets a cold surface and condenses. It is reduced by wearing the headband a little further forward on the forehead, so the air escapes at the sides instead of running up behind the screen, and by working away from air conditioning aimed at the face. If the room is warm it is worth keeping a second clean shield to hand and swapping it halfway through service.
Where a shield does more than at the counter
In delivery and in collection at the door, the two moments when you meet dozens of different people in a few hours and none of them has passed through the venue’s own checks. It also helps working close to colleagues at the same station, where the distance is half a metre for a whole shift. On the floor the advantage is more visual than practical: the guest sees the barrier, and sees it before sitting down.
How to wear it for eight hours
The headband should rest on the forehead and not on the scalp, or after two hours it presses. Keep the screen far enough forward not to touch nose and chin, so it does not collect breath and does not smear at the first movement. Anyone wearing glasses puts them on underneath, settling them before the shield. And like everything handled often, it is picked up by the sides of the headband and not by the clear surface, which otherwise fills with fingerprints right in the field of view.
Cleaning between shifts
A face shield is cleaned with a soft cloth, warm water and surface disinfectant, then dried. No scourers, no abrasive products and no dishwasher: polypropylene clouds with heat and with grit, and a clouded shield is one nobody wears again. Clean both faces, because the inside collects breath and the outside collects what comes from beyond it.
FAQ
What is the face shield made from? Unbreakable polypropylene: it scratches but does not break into shards.
Does it replace a mask? No. It stops direct splashes and protects the eyes, but it does not filter the air and stays open at the sides.
Is it dishwasher safe? No, the heat clouds it. Cloth, warm water and disinfectant.
Does it mist up? It can in a warm room: wearing the headband further forward helps, so the breath escapes at the sides.
Can it be worn over glasses? Yes: it rests on the forehead by the headband and leaves the nose free.
The more you buy, the less you pay: 4 pieces -5%, 6 -7%, 8 -10%, on the same item.
