The V-Rod bottle opener in two lines
This is the 19cm steel V-Rod: at one end the hook that opens a crown cap, at the other the V slot that pulls out the pourer sitting in the neck of the bottle.
Who it is for
For whoever has to pull twenty pourers at the end of the night to wash them. It is the job nobody talks about and everyone does: the pourers come out every night, and pulling them with wet fingers from twenty bottles is slow, awkward and ends with someone bending one.
What the V slot does
A pourer has a rubber collar that holds it in the neck and a metal spout on top. The slot goes under that collar and levers upwards: the force comes from two opposite sides at once, so the pourer comes out straight and whole. Pulling with your fingers puts all the force on one side and the spout bends, which ruins more pourers than anything else. Anyone with a V-Rod at the station finds that out on the first close.

Why flair bartenders use it
It is flat, it is one piece, and its profile is easy to catch in mid-air. In flair the tool spins and comes back to the hand dozens of times, and any joint or moving part becomes a weak point. The V-Rod came from a practical need at the station and ended up as a flair tool too, but the reason it sits in a working bartender’s pocket is still the first one.
How to use it without ruining the pourers
Slide the V under the rubber collar, hold the bottle still with the other hand and push the handle up in one movement, keeping the tool at right angles to the neck. Push at an angle and the lever works on one side, and the spout bends anyway. With long-spout pourers, grip as close to the rubber as you can, where the metal is stiffest.
When the pourer comes out and when it stays
It comes out at the end of service from every bottle left open, and straight away from any bottle going back into stock half full, because a pourer left in a stored bottle leaks and lets the spirit evaporate. It does not come out between drinks, and not from bottles you will finish during the shift. The practical rule is that the pourer round is done with the close of the station, and with the V-Rod in hand it becomes one pass: pull it, drop it in the tray of hot water, move to the next bottle.
Care
It is steel, so washing is simple: hot water and detergent, then dry it to avoid marks. Rinse the slot, because the sticky film of syrup from the pourers collects there, and a dirty V dirties the next pourer. The one check to make now and then is that the two arms of the slot stay parallel.
FAQ
What is the V slot on the V-Rod bottle opener for? Lifting pourers out of the bottle neck by levering under the rubber collar.

How long is it? 19cm, 5cm wide and 5mm thick.
Is it only for the end of the night? That is when it gets most use, but it comes out every time a bottle at the station is changed.
Can it go in the dishwasher? It is steel, but rinse the slot by hand first, because syrup collects in it.
The more you buy, the less you pay: 4 pieces -5%, 6 -7%, 8 -10%, on the same item.
