The sandblasted yarai mixing glass in two lines
The Bars sandblasted yarai is a stirring glass with the diamond cut of the Japanese tradition, worked on sandblasted glass: the surface is frosted, matt white, and the diamond pattern stands in relief. The glass is 5mm thick and the rim has a pouring lip. It comes in two sizes, 500ml and 750ml, chosen on this page.
Who it is for
For bars that stir Negronis, Manhattans, Martinis and Old Fashioneds and want a mixing glass that looks different from the clear crystal everyone else has. In front of the guest the frosted glass works differently: the ice and the colour of the drink show faintly behind the finish, and the bar has a piece people remember. The 5mm wall is what a bar needs, where the mixing glass takes knocks against the sink and the bar spoon.
At home it is the mixing glass for someone starting to stir drinks who wants a glass that survives the first slip.

Two sizes of yarai mixing glass: which to choose
The 500ml glass holds one stirred drink with ice to three quarters full: it is the size for a single serve, and the easier one to handle with one hand. The 750ml holds two drinks with ice, for the double order: two Negronis for the same table come out of one stir, with the same dilution. Bars that serve a lot of drinks in pairs take the large one; bars serving one drink at a time take the small one, or both.
Thick glass holds the cold longer than thin glass, so dilution depends on stirring time rather than the temperature of the room. To strain, sit a julep strainer inside the mouth or a hawthorne strainer on the rim.

Why sandblasted
Sandblasting fires very fine sand at the glass: the surface turns matt and soft to the touch. Behind the bar it has two practical effects. Fingerprints and water marks show far less than on polished crystal, so the mixing glass stays presentable at peak service. And the grip is surer with wet hands, because frosted glass slips less.
The yarai mixing glass next to the others
The Bars also makes a mixing glass in the Napoleon shape. If you want to see the drink through the glass, choose clear or ribbed crystal, like the America mixing glass; if you want a piece that will not break, look at double-wall stainless steel. Every shape is in the mixing glass category.
The more you buy, the less you pay: 4 pieces -5%, 6 -7%, 8 -10%, on the same item.
Care
Rinse straight away in warm water and dry with a soft cloth. Limescale marks sandblasted glass less than polished glass; wash it by hand with a mild detergent and a soft sponge to keep the frosted surface even. The manufacturer does not declare it dishwasher safe.
