The America mixing glass in two lines
The America mixing glass is the stirring glass from Bormioli Rocco’s America ’20s line: 790ml, 16cm tall and 10.8cm in diameter, in Star Glass. The body has vertical ribs, the base is thick and diamond-cut, and the rim has a pouring lip. It shares its design with the America coupes, stemmed glasses and tumblers that many venues already have on the floor.
Who it is for
For the bartender who makes stirred drinks in front of the guest: Negroni, Manhattan, Martini, Boulevardier. The stir lasts thirty seconds, and for those thirty seconds the mixing glass is what the guest watches. Clear glass shows the ice turning and the colour of the drink taking shape, which steel cannot do. And for a bar already serving in America glasses, the mixing glass from the same line ties the bar and the table together.

Seven hundred and ninety millilitres: what the America mixing glass does
790ml brim-full means two stirred drinks with ice filled three quarters of the way, the size for a double order: two Negronis for the same table come out of a single stir, with the same dilution. The thick base keeps the weight low, and the glass does not move while the bar spoon turns. The rim is thin, laser-cut according to the maker, and the lip pours cleanly.
To strain, rest the strainer on it. The supplier declares it compatible with standard strainers: a julep strainer fits inside the mouth, a Hawthorne rests on the rim.

The America ’20s line at the bar
The America ’20s collection is inspired by the American bars of the 1920s and has a piece for every drink on the list: the 220ml cocktail coupe, the 250ml stemmed glass, the 740ml gin and tonic glass. The mixing glass is the piece that links the bar to the glassware: same pattern, same glass. The line is a continuous range, so a broken glass can be replaced with the same one.
How to use the America mixing glass
Chill the America mixing glass with ice for a few seconds and pour away the water that forms. Then fresh ice, the ingredients, and stir with the bar spoon along the wall. In the America mixing glass the vertical ribs can be seen turning with the ice: in front of the guest, the stir becomes part of the service.
Glass or steel
A double-walled steel mixing glass does not break and holds the cold better. Glass shows the drink, and at a cocktail bar that is what sells: the guest watching the stir. Star Glass is tougher than ordinary glass, but it is still glass: set it down, do not knock it against the sink. For high-volume bars there is steel too, in the same mixing glass category.
Care
Bormioli Rocco declares the line dishwasher safe. Load it upright, away from steel pieces, and let it cool before filling it with ice: the jump in temperature is what stresses glass.
