The Iron insulated mixing tin in two lines

This is the Iron mixing tin, 600ml: a stirring vessel made entirely of steel, with an insulated double wall and diamond cutting on the body.

Who it is for

For anyone who wants the insulation of steel without giving up a piece worth looking at. It answers the main fault of plain tins, which is how anonymous they look: here the diamond work gives the metal a surface that reflects instead of staying flat.

The double wall, and what it changes in the drink

Between the two walls there is air, and air is a poor conductor: the heat of the room and the heat of the hand have much further to travel before they reach the liquid. The practical consequence is dilution, the invisible ingredient of every stirred drink. Less heat in means less ice melted, and the cocktail stays what the recipe called for even if a minute passes before it is strained. That is exactly what this tin is for.

Diamond cutting on metal

It does two things. The first is grip: a tin covers itself in condensation like any other vessel, and on a smooth wet steel surface the hand slips more than it does on glass. The second is optical, because a faceted surface breaks the flat reflection of metal and turns it into a pattern, which is what makes an otherwise industrial piece presentable.

Six hundred millilitres, and how they are used

Ice to two thirds, ingredients after, a 30cm bar spoon. That leaves around 200ml of liquid, which is two stirred drinks: it is the service size, while a batch of four wants a larger vessel. The signal that the work is done here is not the chill on the hand, which insulation delays, but the time and the frost on the outside.

Why dilution is an ingredient

In a stirred drink the water coming off the ice is between a fifth and a quarter of the final volume, and it is not waste: it is what makes a mix of spirits drinkable and stretches the profile. The point is that it has to be the amount the recipe expects, no more and no less, and that depends on how long the ice stays in contact with the liquid. An insulated vessel makes that time more predictable, because it takes the heat coming in from outside out of the equation.

Steel or glass, the underlying choice

With steel you gain insulation and toughness, with glass you gain the view: inside a tin you cannot see the ice turn, and on a bar in view of the room that is half the theatre of a stirred drink. Anyone working the floor or working fast chooses metal, anyone building in front of the guest often stays with glass. The cutting on this model is a middle course: it does not give back the transparency, but it takes away the anonymity.

Care

Dishwasher allowed, with drying to keep limescale marks out of the cuts, which is where they settle on worked steel. Avoid long soaking: on a double walled vessel any water that got in through a weld would stay trapped between the walls, and that is not a problem you can fix.

FAQ

How much does the Iron insulated mixing tin hold? Six hundred millilitres, which is two stirred drinks.

What is the insulated double wall? Two walls with air between them, which cuts the heat exchange with the outside.

What is the cutting for? Grip for a wet hand, and breaking the flat reflection of the metal.

Can you see the ice turn? No, and that is the trade steel makes against glass.

Can it go in the dishwasher? Yes, as long as it is not left to soak.

The more you buy, the less you pay: 4 pieces -5%, 6 -7%, 8 -10%, on the same item.
