Crystal or ordinary glass
The difference is in the structure of the material. Crystal has a higher density and a less porous surface, so it stands up longer to industrial detergents and hard water, which are the two things that veil a vessel washed every night. Which of the two in the family
The pattern of the engraving changes and nothing else: same capacity, same material, same performance. The choice is made looking at the bar, because a denser working catches more reflections and shows from a distance, while a more open pattern is quieter and sits better where there are already other decorative elements. The chilling performance
It depends on mass and thickness: a heavy body chilled by the ice stays cold and gives temperature back to the liquid, while a thin glass at room temperature takes it away. How to stir
Ice to two thirds, ingredients after, a 30cm bar spoon turning between thumb and forefinger with the bowl against the wall. The signal that the work is done is the frost on the outside, not the number of turns: when the wall has gone opaque the drink is ready, and carrying on only dilutes it past the recipe.
Ice, and how much goes in
Up to two thirds of the height, in large cubes. That is the quantity that lets the pieces turn as a block instead of rattling, and it is also what keeps the dilution inside the limits of the recipe: with little ice the liquid warms while it turns and you end up stretching the time, which is the commonest way to water a drink while believing you are chilling it. The ice goes in after the liquids and before the spoon.
Care
Dishwasher allowed, loaded well spaced. Rinse the engraving straight after dense syrups, because residue dries in the relief. No scouring pads and no abrasives: on engraved crystal micro scratches show more than on plain glass, precisely because the worked surface is made to reflect.
