The Pour Check Pro in two lines
The Pour Check Pro is the tool for checking how accurate a free pour is: you pour into it from the metal pourer or the speed bottle and read how far out you were. It is graduated in ounces and millilitres to the quarter ounce, with tolerances at the eighth, and it reaches 3oz, that is 90 millilitres.
Who it is for
For anyone pouring without a measure and anyone who has to teach it. Free pouring is learned by counting, but the count wants calibrating: every spout has a different flow rate, every bottle empties differently depending on how full it is, and the hand changes with fatigue. Without something to check against you never know whether the count still holds.
Why a quarter ounce and not a millilitre
Because that is the threshold at which the error shows in the glass. A quarter of an ounce is around seven millilitres: on a 45ml measure that is fifteen per cent out, which moves the balance of a sour noticeably. The tolerances marked at the eighth ounce, around three and a half millilitres, separate the people inside the acceptable margin from the people who were simply lucky. The Pour Check Pro turns a feeling into a number that way.

How to train with it
Fill a bottle with water, fit the spout you actually use and pour while counting, aiming at the measure you have chosen. Then read it. Ten repetitions say more than an hour of explaining, because they show not only the average error but the spread, which is the figure that counts: someone always three millilitres over corrects it in a minute, someone swinging ten either way has to rebuild the movement.
Polycarbonate, and why not glass
Because a training tool gets dropped. Polycarbonate takes knocks, does not chip and sends no splinters into the liquid, and for a piece passed from hand to hand through a training session it is the only sensible material. In exchange it scratches over time, and scratches make the reading less clear: that is why the Pour Check Pro wants washing with a soft sponge and not with an abrasive.
It is also a cost control
A tenth of an ounce extra per measure, over two hundred drinks, is nearly a litre of spirit given away in one night. Checking whoever pours from time to time is the simplest way to see where the gap between theoretical and real usage goes, and it is a check that costs nothing because it is done with water.
When to check again
Every time something changes in the kit: a new spout, a bottle in a different format, a new person behind the bar. The count is not a skill learned once and for all, it is a calibration between one hand and one precise tool. A check of ten pours with the Pour Check Pro takes five minutes and wants repeating at the start of every season, which is when the staff and the list change together.
