The Melodia old fashioned in two lines
A 340ml double in lead-free Luxion crystal, with engraving on the wall and packs of six. It is the size built around the single large cube: 50mm of ice plus the measure, with no empty space left over and no liquid at the rim.
Who it is for
For anyone working with bar ice rather than freezer cubes. That is a practical distinction, not one for enthusiasts: anyone with a mould for large cubes or a machine that makes them needs a glass set to that size, or the ice takes the drink’s place. Anyone serving with standard cubes can use any capacity between 300 and 370ml without noticing the difference.
The arithmetic of dilution, said once
Ice chills by giving up water, and how much it gives up depends on how much surface it has against the liquid. Four small cubes have far more surface than a single cube of the same volume: they chill sooner and water the drink sooner. A large cube does the opposite, chilling more slowly and holding the temperature longer. A 340ml glass with one cube is the point where the two effects balance, and an Old Fashioned stands up for twenty minutes still being what it was. In a narrower format the same cube leaves too little liquid, and the ratio falls apart.
The material and the pattern
Luxion is lead-free crystal, rated by the maker for over 4,000 professional washes without clouding: it goes into daily service without the care traditional crystal wants, and it does not need hand washing. The base is the solid one of the old fashioned family, useful for muddling and building in the glass. The engraving on the wall is more than decoration: it gives grip once the glass covers in condensation, which on a drink served with ice takes a few minutes and is behind a good share of the breakages on the floor.

Take the Melodia old fashioned if
You serve over a single large cube and you want the drink to reach the bottom intact. If instead your work is neat spirits at room temperature, a 300ml size concentrates the aromatics better in the volume above the liquid and carries them to the nose rather than losing them.
Single rocks or double
The single rocks, 180 to 240ml, is the glass for a neat pour. The double, 300 to 420, is the one for a classic built over ice, and it is the format modern bars keep as standard because it covers both uses without looking empty. The Melodia sits in the middle of the double, which is the most versatile part of the category.
Care
Dishwasher without trouble. With sweet liqueurs it pays to rinse before the cycle, because the relief of the engraving holds the sugar and the heat of the wash sets it. Nothing else to watch: Luxion does not mind commercial detergent and does not lose brilliance over repeated cycles.
FAQ
What is the difference against a tall tumbler? The proportion. A tall tumbler is for long drinks lengthened with soda, where the height of the column counts; this is a short wide glass for short, concentrated drinks.
Does it work for neat whisky? Yes, but it is not its best use. In 340ml a 40ml pour barely covers the base: for room temperature tasting a 300ml is better.
Can you muddle in it? Yes, the base is the solid one typical of the family, made for muddling sugar and bitters in the glass.
How many glasses in the pack? Six. That is the format that kits out one station: for a hotel the category also has packs of twelve.
The more you buy, the less you pay: 4 packs -5%, 6 -7%, 8 -10%, on the same item.
