The Opera old fashioned in two lines
A 300ml glass in Luxion crystal with engraving, 94mm tall, in packs of six. It is the short format of the category: the size that concentrates the aromatics of a neat spirit and that carries service on the rocks with ordinary cubes.
Who it is for
For anyone pouring spirits more often than building cocktails. In a venue selling whisky, rum and amaro by the glass the short format is the right one: it makes the measure look like a measure rather than a heel, and it keeps the aromatics near the nose. On bars working mostly on drinks built over a large cube, this size is tight, and it pays to go up forty or sixty millilitres.
Capacity tells you the use, more than the pattern does
In 300ml a 40ml neat pour stays gathered at the base, and the empty volume above works as a chamber for the aromatics: it is the same principle that gives tasting glasses a mouth narrower than the body. The same glass takes two or three standard cubes, or one medium block, and service on the rocks works without the ice stealing the liquid’s place. The limit arrives with the 50mm cube, which goes in but leaves too little room: that wants 340 or 360ml. In trade terms the Opera sits at the low edge of the double old fashioned, the point where this family comes close to a single rocks.
The base and the glass
The base is the solid, hard one of the family, useful for muddling and building in the glass, and it is how you tell a service rocks glass from a cheap one: low cost glasses have a thin base, and it shows at the first muddle and in the first week of washing. Luxion adds the figure you can measure, over 4,000 professional cycles stated without clouding, and the engraving gives grip when the wall is covered in condensation.

Take the Opera old fashioned if
You serve neat spirits and drinks on the rocks over cubes. If instead you build your Old Fashioneds in the glass over a single large cube, a 340 or 360ml size works better and does not make you choose between ice and liquid.
How much ice fits
Two or three standard cubes, or one medium block of 30 or 40mm. The rule that sounds backwards still holds: filling the glass properly with ice waters the drink less than putting a little in, because a larger mass warms more slowly and gives up less water. Saved ice is the fastest way to ruin a drink.
Care
Dishwasher with no particular precautions. On glasses meant for neat spirits a generous final rinse still pays: detergent residue reads more clearly than on a sweetened cocktail, where the sugar covers it. The engraving wants a rinse before the cycle when you have been working with thick liqueurs.
FAQ
Is the Opera old fashioned too small for a Negroni? No, a Negroni over cubes fits without trouble. It only gets tight if you serve it over a single 50mm cube.
How tall is it? Ninety-four millimetres, the usual height of the short doubles in this category.
Does the engraving suffer in the dishwasher? No. The relief holds sugar if you do not rinse first, but the pattern does not wear down with the cycles.
What is the difference against a 360ml model? Sixty millilitres, which sound like little and change the use: the 300ml works on neat pours and cubes, the 360ml is set up for the single large cube.
The more you buy, the less you pay: 4 packs -5%, 6 -7%, 8 -10%, on the same item.
