Cracking ice is a technique, not a blow

Why large ice
Because it melts more slowly. A large cube has less surface exposed for its volume than ten small cubes, so it chills just as well but dilutes much less: that is why stirred drinks served over large ice stay full-flavoured to the last sip. Bartenders who work this way need to cut blocks down, which is why this bar spoon carries a hammer at the other end.
The stirring move does not change
The stem turns between thumb and forefinger while the bowl rests against the side of the glass, and the ice turns as one without clattering. 35cm is the middle length, reaching the bottom of an average mixing glass and staying easy to handle in a rocks glass: the hammer takes nothing from the main job, it adds one where it was not in the way.
Crack the ice outside the glass
Always, on a cloth or a chopping board, never in the glass the drink will be served in.
