How to dissolve a sugar cube

Why the Old Fashioned starts with a sugar cube

Because in its original form the drink is sugar, bitters, water and spirit, in that order: the sugar is dissolved first, or it stays on the bottom and the first sip is neat spirit while the last is syrup. Using syrup skips the step and gives a different drink, more even and less interesting. Care

Unplated stainless steel: dishwasher safe. The disc is the part that gets dirtiest, because dry sugar sticks to it and forms a crust, so rinse it straight after use rather than at the end of service. As on any bar spoon, the neck between bowl and stem is the part to treat gently.
