Which of the two sizes

30/45 follows recipe books written in centilitres, where the doses that come up most are 30 and 45ml. 30/60 follows American ones, built on one and two ounces. It is not a question of size but of which book is open on the bar, and that is how to choose Mr Slim: look at the doses you pour most often and take the size that holds them to the brim, because the brim is the measure nobody has to interpret.

The inside markings, and how to read them

The markings turn two cones into four or five measures, and they are why a marked jigger costs more than a plain one. Read them with the jigger at eye level: seen from above, the liquid looks higher than it is, and on a small dose the error easily reaches ten per cent. It is the same parallax error as with a kitchen measuring jug.

The black band is plated

That means hand washing. Industrial dishwasher cycles attack the coating and dull it in patches, and on a narrow central band the mark shows at once. Mild soap, a rinse and drying straight away: thirty seconds that keep the jigger looking new for years.

Care

Rinse straight after use, because syrups and thick liqueurs dry quickly and leave a film that reduces the working volume of the cone. The inside markings are where residue builds up first: check them against the light now and then and clean them with a soft bottle brush.
