The button coaster in two lines
A round natural rubber coaster, 100mm across, shaped like a shirt button with the four holes. Seven colours available.
Who it is for
For anyone who wants colour on the table, and for anyone who wants to run the coasters as a floor code. Two different uses of the same object, and the second one pays.
Seven colours, and how they get used
The obvious way is to mix them and let the table look cheerful. The useful way is to give one colour to each zone or to each shift: whoever carries the drinks knows where they go without asking, and one walk round the room says at a glance which tables have been served and when. The button coaster comes in black, eco wood, red, orange, yellow, green and purple, which is enough to cover a room split into sections.

The button shape
It is a light reference: you recognise it without it taking over, because a button is an object that sits anywhere and belongs to no particular theme. That is the difference against the heavily themed models, the vinyl record among them. The button coaster works in a venue with no declared theme, where all you want is one more detail than a plain disc.
Natural rubber, and grip
It does not slide on the table and it does not stick to the base of the glass, which is the flaw of card: card glues itself to the condensation, lifts with the drink and drops halfway to the guest. Rubber takes the mould well, so the four holes and the raised rim of the button read clearly, and it does not absorb, so stains stay out.
The raised rim holds the condensation
That is a practical advantage the shape brings with it. On a plain disc the water running down the glass ends up on the table; on the button the rim keeps it inside until it evaporates or until the coaster is taken away. On untreated wooden tables that is the difference between a ring and no ring.
How many to keep per colour
If you run them as a code, as many as the covers in the largest section, times two. The doubling always applies, because a wet coaster wants to dry rather than go straight back under another drink; and if the colour code is to work, running out of the right colour means losing the system at the exact moment you need it.
Care
Damp cloth or warm water. Keep them out of the commercial dishwasher: high heat softens natural rubber and the moulded relief is the first thing to lose its shape. Dry them fully before they go back into service, standing up or on a cloth.
Write the colour code down
As with the squeeze bottles behind the bar, a code that everyone reads their own way is worse than no code, because it gives a confidence that is not there. Write it on a sheet in the office, explain it to new staff on their first shift, and change it only all together. It takes five lines, and it is what turns seven colours into a system rather than a collection.
FAQ

What is the point of several colours? Running them as a floor code, by zone or by service shift.
What is it made from? Natural rubber, which does not slide and does not stick to the glass.
