The pallet coaster in two lines
This is the pallet coaster in natural wood: a miniature pallet of 13 by 9 centimetres, with the slats spaced the way they are on a real one.
Who it is for
For anyone with an industrial or reclaimed interior who wants the detail on the table to match the rest of the room. It is the one context in which this object makes sense.
Real wood, with everything that brings
It is not an imitation: it is timber, and it behaves like timber. It absorbs what runs off the glass, takes on condensation and over time darkens in patches, which on a reclaimed interior is consistent and on a polished table is dirt. Anyone taking the pallet coaster has to accept that it ages in plain sight, because that is what natural wood does.

The slats are not only decoration
The gap between one slat and the next lets condensation drain instead of holding it under the glass, so the base stays drier than it would on a solid surface. The other side of that is that the same condensation reaches the table, and on a delicate top it has to be allowed for. It is the trade off of any slatted rest, the pallet coaster included.
Two centimetres of thickness
That is more than twice a normal coaster, and it shows. The glass sits higher and the whole thing reads as a small plinth, which works well under a drink served in a short tumbler. Under a tall coupe the same thickness adds instability, because it raises the weight of a glass that carries little of it low to begin with.
Thirteen by nine, not ten by ten
It is the one non standard size in the family, and it wants comparing with your own table. A rectangular pallet does not line up with the square or round coasters you already own, so either you take it on for every cover or you accept a table that does not match. The rectangular shape, in any case, is what makes the object recognisable.
How many to keep
Twice the covers served together, as with all of them. With wood there is one more reason: a wet pallet coaster has to be left to dry properly, not wiped with a cloth and put back into service, because damp wood set back under a cold drink never dries out completely and starts to smell.
Care
Dry cloth and nothing else, wherever possible. No soaking, no dishwasher and no detergent: the wood swells, the slats come away and the glue gives. Heavily stained ones get replaced rather than rescued, and that is the cost of choosing the real material.
Wood that darkens, and how long it lasts
The working life is measured in months rather than years, and it is fair to know that first. A wooden coaster used every night takes dark marks around the bearing point and after a few months the slats darken unevenly. Anyone choosing it allows for periodic replacement, as with any natural material in service.
