The Pineapple Spoon in two lines

It is a bar spoon in 18/10 stainless steel with a silver finish, 31cm long and 80g in weight. The shaft is twisted and the end opposite the bowl is shaped like a pineapple.

Who the Pineapple Spoon is for

For bartenders who stir in the mixing glass and in tall glasses, and want a tool that stands out without giving up on work. 31cm is a working length: it reaches the bottom of a mixing glass full of ice without the fingers going in.

Teardrop, fork, disc, muddler and strainer: the end opposite the bowl decides the spoon’s second job.
Length decides everything, and 31cm is the right size

A short 25cm bar spoon is fine in a tumbler and useless in a 700ml mixing glass: the ice comes halfway up, so does the spoon, and you end up stirring the surface rather than the drink. At 31cm the Pineapple Spoon goes all the way down and keeps the hand out of the glass.

At the other end, 40cm models handle any depth but get awkward in a rocks glass, where the long handle knocks into everything on the bar top. The middle length is the one that stays in the hand for most services.

The twisted shaft is not decoration

The spiral on the shaft is what makes stirring work. The spoon is not gripped in the fist: it is held between the middle and ring fingers and left to turn, and the groove acts as a guide so the fingers stay still while the shaft rotates. That is the movement that lets you stir for twenty seconds without tiring the wrist or knocking the walls of the glass.

It is also why a smooth-shafted spoon feels wrong in the hands of someone who knows how to stir: the track is missing. On the Pineapple Spoon the spiral runs almost the whole length, exactly where the fingers work.

18/10 steel, and what it means in practice

It is the alloy of professional cutlery: eighteen parts chromium to ten of nickel. Together they keep rust away and give the steel its shine and its resistance to acids. On a tool that spends the day in citrus juice, that resistance is what counts: a lesser steel will, in the long run, stain and cloud in patches.

The Pineapple Spoon goes in the dishwasher with no special care, because it has no plating or coating to spoil. It is bare steel from the bowl to the tip.

The pineapple end, and what it really does

On a bar spoon, the end opposite the bowl has always had a second job: the fork spears olives, the disc presses, the muddler end cracks ice. Here the pineapple shape is openly decorative, and it is better to say so than to invent a function for it.

What it does, and it is not nothing, is add weight opposite the bowl. A bar spoon with no counterweight tends to tip forward when set down and turns badly in the hand; with its 80g spread towards the tip, this one stays balanced, which is the technical reason almost every model has something at the end.

Care

Dishwasher safe. The one habit worth keeping is to rinse it straight after working with thick syrups, not for the steel but because sugar dries in the spiral of the shaft and is then hard to shift: a freshly used spoon needs only running water, a dried one needs a brush.

The more you buy, the less you pay: 4 pieces -5%, 6 -7%, 8 -10%, on the same item.

FAQ

How long is the Pineapple Spoon? 31cm, the length that reaches the bottom of a mixing glass while keeping the hand out.

What is it made from? 18/10 stainless steel, the steel of professional cutlery, with a silver finish.

Is it dishwasher safe? Yes, with no special care: it is bare steel, with no plating.

Does the pineapple end do anything? It acts as a counterweight and makes the spoon recognisable. It is not a tool: for spearing, you need a fork end.
