The steel speed rail 82cm in two lines

The 18/10 AISI 304 stainless steel speed rail in the long format: 820 millimetres of rail for about ten bottles, with a low front edge and quick release slots.

Who it is for

For a long bar and a wide list. Ten places under the counter cover a station working across several drink families without trips to the back bar.

With ten places the line gets built by family

Rather than by necessity. The bases take the middle section, where the hand arrives without moving the body, and the modifiers go to the ends. It is a layout you design once and then leave alone: the speed of the service depends more on this than on the capacity itself, and a ten place rail exists to make that design possible.

Six places hold the bases, ten add the modifiers. And the low front edge changes the movement.

The metal counts for more in the long format

Because the rail carries more weight. Ten full bottles are over ten kilos hanging off the lip of the bar: ABS takes it, but steel does not flex and spreads the load across the fixings more evenly. On a short rail the difference is theoretical, on one of 820 millimetres it shows over the years, at the point where plastic starts to give in the middle.

AISI 304 under the counter

It is the right alloy for a spot that is permanently wet. What drips off the necks collects under the bar, and with lesser steels that constant standing liquid brings pitting. 18/10 takes that condition for years, as long as it gets unhooked and dried: no alloy is eternal if liquid sits on the bottom every night.

The low front edge, three hundred times a night

With a high edge the bottle has to be lifted before it can be tipped, so the movement is in two stages; with a low one you take it and bring it up in one. It is the least visible and most important detail, and you only notice it when you go back to working on a rail that does not have it.

Before you buy, the tape measure

You need 820 millimetres of clear bar. If the counter is broken by a sink or a column, two 56cm rails mount where one long one will not fit, and they still let you split the families into two groups. It is the first check to make, because it is the only one that cannot be fixed afterwards.

Care

Unhook from the slots and wash separately, every night, with hot water and detergent. Dry before remounting. No common steel wool, which leaves iron particles that go on to rust on the surface and look like a fault in the stainless.

The order, written down and left alone

With ten places the list matters more than with six, because nobody remembers ten positions on a first shift. It goes inside the cupboard door and gets updated when the drinks list changes, not when somebody has an idea. On a ten bottle rail the layout is half the value of the piece: the other half is that it carries the weight without flexing.

Mounting, tested under full load

The slots go onto supports that carry ten full bottles, which is over ten kilos. The test is made by pushing down on the loaded rail before you call it mounted: a fixing that gives way does it during a service, never during an empty test.
