The service top is the only part of the bar a guest looks at closely for the whole wait: it is where they rest their hands, and it is where the glass arrives. Lighting it from below completely changes how the station reads in the hours when the room light drops, which are exactly the hours that make the numbers.

The panel is milk white polycarbonate, not a clear material, and the difference is worth the whole product. A lit clear top also shows what is underneath, which is the mess of the working area, the cables and the hands moving; an opal top lets the light through and stops the view, so the guest sees a surface that glows and not the back of house. It is also why the light reaching the glass is diffuse and even rather than striped, and a drink set down on it lights from below with no pattern of LEDs showing through.

Three thousand kelvin, which means warm light

The colour temperature of the strip is 3000K, the same as the room lighting of an evening venue and the reason the top does not clash with the rest of the light. A cool light, around 6000K, would have made the bar look like a laboratory display and would have pushed the colours of the drinks towards blue. With warm white the red of a Negroni stays red and the photograph the guest takes is faithful, which is what a venue that also lives on those photographs needs.

Waterproof by construction

The strip is rated IP65, protected against a jet of water and against dust. On a station where the work involves ice and liquids, where the top is rinsed at the end of the night and often stands outdoors, that is the specification that separates a product made for a bar from a LED strip bought by the metre. The transformer is waterproof too, and matched to the strip length of your model.

Choose the illuminated bar top if

You work evenings and outdoors, the station stands in a dark space where the counter disappears, or you do events where the set-up is part of the service. If you work daytime or in a room that is already lit, the effect is lost and the money sits better in an accessory that works all the time, like the wheels or the case.

The panel comes out and washes

It is removable, and that is what makes the illuminated bar top workable in a real service, because a lit top that is dirty reads worse than a clean opaque one. Lit from below, a top shows everything: fingerprints, syrup smears, the ring left by a wet glass. Being able to slide it out and wash it separately, instead of cleaning it in place with the lights on, is what lets you start each evening from a clean surface. During service a microfibre cloth to hand and a wipe every time the counter clears is enough.
