The dasher top in two lines
This is the chromed plastic pouring top on a cork base, the part that turns any small bottle into a dash bottle: it pushes in where the cap was and lets the liquid out in controlled drops.
Who it is for
For anyone who already has the bottle, and for anyone reusing one. It is the part that is almost always missing: glass containers turn up everywhere, dasher tops far less often, and it is the top that does all the work.
The cork makes the seal, for two reasons
The first is obvious: it compresses and adapts to necks of slightly different diameters, so the same dasher top sits on several bottles. The second shows up in use. A rigid top, screwed or pushed, has to come off and go back on with two hands every time, while a cork pulls out and goes back with one movement, which is what you need behind a bar where only one hand is free. In exchange, cork is a living material: it wears, it dries out if left unused for months, and it has to be replaced once it stops holding.

What a dash actually is
It is the amount that leaves the top on one flick of the wrist, and in practice it sits between 0.7 and 1ml. It is not a codified unit: it depends on the spout, and that is exactly what makes it useful to keep the same dasher top on every preparation. The dose becomes repeatable because it depends on the tool and not on who is holding it, and two different people put the same amount into the same drink.
One measurement before you order
The diameter of the cork decides which bottles it fits, and the supplier does not declare it. Anyone who already owns a glass bitter bottle should measure the neck before ordering, or ask us to confirm the fit: it is the only check to make, and it takes ten seconds with a ruler or a caliper.
Why a pipette is not the same thing
A chemist’s pipette doses in true drops, meaning quantities far smaller than a dash, and it has to be refilled each time from the container. A dasher top stays on the bottle and works on a flick of the wrist: it is the difference between one movement and three. In a service where bitters go into half the drinks, those two movements saved, multiplied by two hundred cocktails, are real minutes.
The chrome and the bar on show
The silver finish is not only a matter of looks: it is the only part of the top that shows when the bottle stands in a row with the others, and on a lit shelf it gives continuity to a set of mismatched bottles. It is the cheapest way to make a station built one piece at a time look as though it was planned.
Care
Rinse the top under running water and leave it upright to dry, because extracts settle in the channel and dry there. The cork should not be left soaking or put through the dishwasher: it flakes. Once it stops holding, or once it keeps the smell of the last preparation, replace it rather than nursing it along.
FAQ
Which bottles does the dasher top fit? Those with a neck that matches the cork base: the diameter is not declared, so ask us to confirm.
What is it for? Pouring bitters and house preparations in dashes instead of in a stream.
What is it made from? Chromed plastic with a cork base.
Is it dishwasher safe? No, the cork flakes: hand rinse and dry it standing up.
How much is one dash? In practice between 0.7 and 1ml, depending on the spout.
The more you buy, the less you pay: 4 pieces -5%, 6 -7%, 8 -10%, on the same item.
