The overhead glass rack in two lines

The overhead glass rack is a stainless steel grid of 35 x 30cm that fixes above the bar counter or under a wall unit and holds stemware upside down, hanging by the foot. It weighs a little over 300 grams and it is the most compact way to keep wine glasses and cocktail coupes in order.

Who it is for

For anyone with more stemware than places to put it. A glass standing upright takes up surface and collects dust inside; turned over on a shelf it rests on the most fragile part it has, the rim. Hanging it by the foot solves both problems at once, and it frees the shelf for something else.

Why the rim should not carry the weight

The rim is the thinnest zone of a glass and the part that meets the lips: a chip there makes the piece unusable even when the rest is intact. Standing stemware upside down on a hard surface puts it in contact with the shelf along exactly that line, and every slightly distracted pick up makes the sound everyone knows. An overhead glass rack moves the bearing point to the foot, the sturdiest part of the glass, and the rim hangs clear.

Upside down they dry, upright they do not

A washed glass left standing keeps a film of water in the bottom that evaporates slowly and leaves the limescale ring you later see against the light. Turned over and hanging, the water runs off and air moves all around it: it dries sooner and it dries better, without the cloth that is the main source of lint on glassware. That is why in serious bars the stemware hangs rather than sitting in a cupboard.

Choose the overhead glass rack if

You serve wine and cocktails up, and the space on the bar has run out; you want the glassware in view and in order; you are after something that goes up with two screws and asks nothing else. If instead you have to store dozens of identical pieces, stackable washing crates protect them better in transit.

Thirty five by thirty is a module

The measurements say this is a single element, not an installation: it covers the zone above the service station, not the whole length of the bar. Anyone needing more capacity puts two or three side by side in line, which is also how you get dedicated lanes by glass type, wine on one side and coupes on the other. Keeping them separate saves the second you lose hunting for the right one during service, and at the end of the night it makes it obvious what is missing from its place.
