The 150ml conical flask in brief

The Bars 150ml flask is the small size of the laboratory conical flask: borosilicate 3.3 glass, narrow neck, scale printed on the wall, frosted panel for the label and cork stopper. It fits in one hand and takes up the space of a shot glass on the bar top.

Who it is for

Bars working with small, concentrated quantities. Tinctures, house bitters, saline solution, citric acid solution, spice extracts: preps used by the drop or the millilitre, which sit at the bottom of a large container for weeks taking in air. In a 150ml size the prep is used up before it degrades.

It also works as a display container on the back bar. A row of identical small flasks, hand-labelled on the frosted panel, is how a station shows its prep work without anyone having to talk about it.

Why borosilicate glass for tinctures

Tinctures are made with high-proof alcohol and acids, and stay in the container for weeks. Borosilicate 3.3 gives nothing to the liquid and does not cloud, while plastic absorbs aromas and passes them on to the next prep: a flask that held a cardamom tincture, once washed, does not pass cardamom to the saline solution. That is why laboratories use this glass, and it is the same reason it works here.

The narrow neck reduces the surface in contact with air, which is what makes aromatics lose their volatile notes. The wide base keeps the flask upright even half full and on a wet surface, where a tall bottle tips over.

How many to keep

One per prep, and a few spares. Bars working with tinctures always have three or four in use at once, and the advantage of identical flasks is that the pencilled label is the only thing that changes: the next shift reads the panel and knows what it is holding.

The more you buy, the less you pay: 4 pieces -5%, 6 -7%, 8 -10%, on the same item.

The 150ml flask on the bar top

The small size fits in the bar organiser next to the commercial bitters and stays within reach during service. With a dropper, rest it on the neck of the flask and draw from there, without decanting: two seconds per drink, and the prep stays closed between uses. On the back bar, the flask sits in a row with the others and shows the prep work.

The 150ml flask alongside the others

The same glass comes in the larger sizes: the 500ml flask for the day’s syrups and the 1000ml flask for batches. Graduated droppers and other containers are in the molecular mixology accessories category.

Care

Hot water and mild detergent, with a thin bottle brush for the neck. After an aromatic tincture, a rinse with alcohol takes away the oily residue that water leaves behind. Wash the cork separately and let it air-dry, so it does not keep the smell of the previous prep.
