The 500ml conical flask in brief

The Bars 500ml flask is a laboratory conical flask in borosilicate 3.3 glass, with a narrow neck, a scale printed on the wall, a frosted panel for the label and a cork stopper. It is the middle size of the line, between the litre and the 150ml.

Who it is for

Bars that make the day’s syrup. Half a litre is what one station uses in a night between sugar syrup, diluted honey and flavoured syrups, and a container of the right size avoids two mistakes: making too much and pouring the rest away, or making too little and running dry mid-service. In the GP, poured-away syrup is a cost nobody measures, and it adds up.

It also works for short infusions. A spice in rum, a peel in vermouth, a tincture left for two days: these are half-litre jobs, and the flask is labelled with the date on the frosted panel, which rubs clean when the contents change.

Why borosilicate 3.3

It is laboratory glass, and it expands very little with heat: it withstands the move from hot to cold that cracks ordinary glass. Behind the bar that happens all the time, because syrup is dissolved hot and cooled, infusions are made above 60°C and prep comes out of the fridge to be topped up. With ordinary glass each of those steps is a risk.

The conical shape keeps the flask steady on a wet surface, thanks to the wide base, and lets you swirl the liquid with a turn of the wrist without it leaving the narrow neck. It is the move used to dissolve sugar and remix prep before pouring.

How many per station

One for each prep on the menu. A sugar syrup, a flavoured syrup and a cordial are three flasks, all the same and all labelled: the station reads at a glance even for someone who did not set it up, and the shift change needs no explanations. These are containers used every day and reordered with the same maker’s code.

The more you buy, the less you pay: 4 pieces -5%, 6 -7%, 8 -10%, on the same item.

The 500ml flask and decanting

The narrow neck is also a limit, and it is fair to say so: filling the flask from a pan needs a funnel, and so does emptying it into a speed rail bottle. Bars that decant a lot keep a steel funnel next to the flasks and stop thinking about it. In return, the same neck holds in the aromas and lets you swirl the liquid without spilling.

The 500ml flask alongside the others

The same glass comes in a large and a small size: the 1000ml flask for batches and the 150ml flask for tinctures. Droppers, bottles and graduated containers are in the molecular mixology accessories category.

Care

Hot water, mild detergent and a bottle brush for the neck. Rinse syrup out straight away, before sugar dries in the base of the cone. Wash the cork separately and let it air-dry before putting it back.
