The stainless steel mule mug in two lines
The Bars mule mug is a 350ml mug in AISI 304 stainless steel, mirror polished, with a loop handle. It is the Moscow Mule mug in the version that never needs polishing: steel does not oxidise and does not react with lime. The pack holds three mugs, the unit the manufacturer sells it in.
Who it is for
For cocktail bars serving the Moscow Mule and its relatives, the Kentucky Mule, the Mexican Mule, the Dark ‘n’ Stormy, and wanting a metal mug without the upkeep of copper. For hotel bars and terraces, where metal does not break if it hits the floor. In the rush the mug is filled, served and back at the sink with no second thought: there is no patina to protect.
At home it is the mug for a Sunday Mule, with frost on the wall as at the bar.

Why a stainless steel mule mug instead of copper
A metal mug exists for the cold: metal carries the temperature of the ice to the wall, the wall frosts over, and the drink is recognisable at the table before the first sip. Copper does this, but asks for two kinds of care: an inner lining, because bare copper reacts with the acid in lime, and polishing, because it darkens in the air. AISI 304 steel asks for neither. It is the same steel as shakers and jiggers, and behind the bar it is washed the same way.
350ml is the classic Mule mug size: the spec with 45ml of vodka, lime, ginger beer and ice comes to the rim with nothing left over.

Three mugs to a pack
The Bars sells this mug in boxes of three, and so do we. Three mugs are one round for a table; a list with the Mule as a feature wants a dozen, four packs, and the mugs all arrive identical. The code is in the manufacturer’s catalogue, so a mug that breaks or walks off the bar can be replaced with the same one.
The more you buy, the less you pay: 4 packs -5%, 6 -7%, 8 -10%, on the same item. The discount applies automatically in the basket.
The Moscow Mule in the steel mug
Fill the mug with ice, crushed if possible, add the vodka and lime juice, top with ginger beer and give it a quick turn with the bar spoon. A lime wedge on the rim, and serve straight away, when the frost has just appeared on the wall. That frost is the sign the drink is as cold as it should be.
Choose the steel mule mug if
You want a metal mug without polishing and without worrying about lime. For more capacity and a matt finish, see the 450ml vintage mug. If the venue has copper in the fit-out, the rest of the Moscow Mule category has copper mugs.
Care
Hot water and a mild detergent, then dry straight away with a cloth: that keeps the mirror finish free of limescale marks. A soft sponge is all it needs.
