The Trunk tiki mug in two lines
The Trunk tiki mug holds 400 millilitres in hand painted ceramic, 12 centimetres tall and 10 across, with an idol carved on a log as its subject. It is the lowest and the widest in the family, and that proportion has precise practical consequences.
Who it is for
For anyone building serious garnishes. Ten centimetres across against the seven or eight of the other mugs means a much larger surface to set fruit, mint, flowers and spice on: the more elaborate tiki drink, the one the guest photographs, needs that room and cannot be built in a narrow mug.
Wide and low: what actually changes
Three things. The first is the garnish, which can run outwards instead of only upwards, and which holds better because it sits on a wide base. The second is the ice: a wide mouth lets you pack crushed ice fast and build a more stable dome. The third is the other side of it, and it is fair to say so: more surface exposed to the air means slightly faster melting than in a narrow mug of the same capacity. On a drink served straight away you will not notice; on one that sits on the table for twenty minutes you will.

Take the Trunk tiki mug if
If the garnishes are part of the product and you need room to build them. If instead the service is fast and the drinks sit on the table a while, a narrower mug slows the crushed ice down.
The carved log, and the strand it belongs to
The idol carved in wood is one of the founding subjects of the tiki repertoire, and it comes from Pacific totems reworked by American bars in the nineteen forties. Against the Moai, which is a stone statue from Easter Island, a carved log calls up a warm material and hand work, and on a list built around aged rums and spice it lands better than stone.
Ice in a wide mouth
Crushed ice goes in until it rises above the rim, and on ten centimetres of diameter the dome you get is wide and stable. The rule that more mass holds longer always applies, so fill generously: with a wide mouth the temptation to use less ice is strong, because the volume already looks full, and that is the mistake that ruins the drink halfway down.
What the garnish costs
On a tiki drink the garnish is not free: fresh mint, half a slice of pineapple, dehydrated fruit and spice have a cost that over forty drinks a night shows. The Trunk tiki mug, with its wide mouth, allows generous garnishes but also lets you get the effect from a few well placed elements instead of piling things on. That is a difference you see in the food cost at the end of the month.
Care
Hand wash with a neutral soap. It is the easiest mug in the whole family to clean, because with ten centimetres of opening your hand goes in comfortably and the sponge reaches everywhere, base included. The hollows of the carving want a brush when you have been working with thick juices.
FAQ
Why is the Trunk tiki mug wider than the others? Ten centimetres of diameter are there to build wide garnishes and to pack crushed ice quickly.

How much does it hold? Four hundred millilitres, the standard size for tiki drinks of medium length.
Is it easy to clean? It is the easiest in the family: your hand goes in without trouble.
