The wooden skull in two lines
The wooden skull is a 300 millilitre tiki mug in hand painted ceramic, 12 centimetres tall, with a log carved with a skull as its subject. It is the smallest in the family, and the size is a deliberate choice.
Who it is for
For anyone serving short, concentrated tiki drinks. Not every tropical recipe is long: there are aged rum drinks built on few parts, where volume is not needed and there is little crushed ice. Three hundred millilitres is the size that keeps them in proportion instead of leaving them lost at the bottom of a half litre mug.
The skull, and which strand it belongs to
It is not a Polynesian subject but a graft from the pirate and Caribbean strand, which came into the tiki repertoire early and stayed. That is why the skull goes with rum more than with any other spirit: it talks about the routes, the ports and the smuggling rather than about the islands of the Pacific. On a list built on dark and aged rums it is the most coherent subject there is; on a strictly Polynesian tiki list it tells a different story.

Take the wooden skull if
If you have short tiki drinks and aged rums on the list. Zombies and long drinks want the 500ml pieces from the same family, where ice and liquid sit together without being squeezed.
Three hundred millilitres: the size almost nobody considers
Tiki is associated with large formats, and that is why the small size gets ignored. It is in fact the one needed for rum tastings, for short tiki drinks built on a single spirit and for reduced versions of long recipes, which plenty of venues offer to let people taste without committing them to half a litre. With the crushed ice packed properly the actual liquid sits around 130 to 150ml, which is the length of a short, concentrated drink.
Dark rum and the opaque mug
There is a technical coherence here as well as an aesthetic one. An aged rum has molasses, wood and spice aromatics that hold up through a dome of crushed ice and reach the nose; a light, citrus led spirit, in a closed mug under ice, reads far less. The opaque vessel rewards drinks with deep aromatics, and that is another way of saying the subject and the contents get chosen together.
Rum tastings
A section of aged rums sold by the glass carries high margins and takes little work, but it has to be presented. The wooden skull, at 300ml, is the right size for a taste served with one cube or a little crushed ice, and the subject tells the Caribbean story better than any note on the menu.
Care
Hand wash with a neutral soap. The carved skull has deep hollows where sugar residue settles: a soft brush is the right tool, and it wants using before the residue dries. Dry the hollows completely before putting it away.
