Copper and acidic drinks: the facts

There is some confusion on this, so it is worth being clear. The FDA Food Code advises against contact between copper and drinks with a pH below 6.0, and a Moscow Mule, with lime and ginger beer, sits around 2.7: in a bare copper mug, copper can pass into the drink. Serious mugs, this one included, solve the problem at the root with plating: the copper is on the outside, where it is seen and conducts, while the inside is stainless steel and never touches the liquid. That is why a plated mug is the correct version, not a cheaper take on solid copper.

Copper over time

A copper mug does not stay bright by itself: a dark patina comes with time, the natural oxidation of the metal in air. It does not reach the drink, since the inside is steel, but it changes the look. If you want the mug always bright, allow for a polish now and then; if you prefer worn copper, let it darken, which is a fair choice of style.

Care

Always by hand: warm water, mild soap, dry straight away, so the copper keeps its colour. The dark patina comes off with copper polish or the old method of lemon and salt on the outside, never inside.
