The Tattoo champagne coupe in two lines

The Tattoo is a coupe in Luxion crystal glass holding 270ml, with dense vintage engraving, in packs of six. It sits at the top of the coupe band and carries the most elaborate decoration of the whole category.

Who it is for

For a bar that wants the bowl seen from the other side of the room. On a drink served up the glass is more exposed than on any other format, because there is no ice to break the view and the bowl is held high on the stem: dense decoration on this shape works far harder than on a tumbler.

Decoration on a coupe, and its limit

The general rule of worked glassware holds here too, with one difference. On a tall glass the engraving competes with the colour of the drink along the whole column; on a coupe the liquid is shallow and sits at the bottom, so the decoration mostly has the empty upper part to work on and takes no room from the contents. That is why heavily engraved coupes also work on pale drinks, where an engraved tumbler would give little. The limit is the light: engraving works by refraction, so in a very dark room it gives back less than the catalogue promises.

Choose the Tattoo coupe if

You have an atmosphere venue, the bar is lit and you want a bowl that makes a scene. For short stirred drinks, which finish at around 90ml, a Nick and Nora keeps them cold much longer and stops them looking thin.

Two hundred and seventy millilitres: how they fill

A shaken drink finishing at 120 or 130ml comes to a little under half the bowl, which on a wide shape is the proportion not to go past: filling a coupe to the rim means pouring it over someone at the first movement. Anyone who wants a visually full bowl should come down in size rather than raise the measure: inflating the recipe to fill the glass is the quickest way to unbalance a classic.

Care

Luxion goes through the dishwasher without clouding. The denser the decoration the more it holds, so with egg white, syrups and dense liqueurs a rinse before the cycle is worth it. Load the basket with care, because on stemmed glasses breakage almost always comes from contact between two pieces.

Decoration and the choice of light

Anyone buying the Tattoo coupe for its effect should look at the bar before the catalogue. The engraving works by refraction and needs a direct source: under service lighting it is the bowl noticed first, in a very dark room it gives back a fraction of what it promises. That is the test that decides whether this coupe is worth its price in your venue.

FAQ

Does the Tattoo coupe hold 270 or 290ml? The name and the price list say 270, the supplier’s description says 290. The figure written here is 270, and the difference is being checked with the supplier.

Does it work in a low lit venue? Less than it looks: the engraving works by refraction and needs light falling on it.

Does it suit pale drinks? Yes, on a coupe the decoration works on the empty upper part and does not compete with the colour of the liquid.

Is it the same line as the Tattoo old fashioned? The same family of engraving, a different shape.

Does it suit table service? Yes, though like every wide bowl it spills more than one with an inward turning rim.

The more you buy, the less you pay: 4 packs -5%, 6 -7%, 8 -10%, on the same item.
