The square white dipping dishes: size and use
The white Friendly square dish by APS has a 6.5cm side, a 3cm height and a 50ml capacity. It is post-consumer recycled PET, stackable and dishwasher safe. It is sold in a pack of 6.
Why square
Round dishes leave empty gaps between one and the next. Square ones sit side against side: three in a row take up 19.5cm and form a single block. On a rectangular board or a narrow tray it is the difference between an ordered arrangement and three scattered objects.
They suit the wine shop and the wine bar that send out a board of charcuterie and cheese with honey, jam and chutney beside it. Three square dishes along the short side of the board stay put because they lean on each other, and the waiter carries the board in one hand.

What goes in the square dipping dishes
As a guide to use, 50ml is a single portion of olives or nuts, or the accompaniment to a board for two: honey, fig jam, chutney, a cream cheese. The 3cm height lets a coffee spoon reach the bottom.
The corners have a practical use: you can pour from one. Anyone serving a thin sauce, a vinaigrette or soy, can tip it onto the plate without drips running down the rim. A round shape does not allow that.

Recycled PET on the board
The material APS declares for the Friendly collection is post-consumer recycled PET, meaning plastic that has been used once, recovered and made into tableware. It is recyclable again when its working life ends. What the waiter gains is a rigid plastic dish in place of porcelain or glass: one that slides off a board between tables is picked up and washed, and no one searches under the chairs for pieces or stops to sweep.
The cost side follows. Small porcelain chips in the rack and gets cleared away with the napkins, so it is the tableware a venue replaces most often. A PET dish costs less each time. Friendly is a continuing range in the APS catalogue: the shape ordered today can be reordered in eight months under the same code.
Care
The dishes are declared dishwasher safe by the manufacturer, and not suitable for the microwave. They are not made for heating, so a warm sauce is heated elsewhere and poured in afterwards. Between washes they stack one inside the other, as APS also declares, and the stack on the back bar has the footprint of a single dish.
The pack
The dishes are sold six to a pack, with the price for the pack. A board with three accompaniments uses three: two packs cover four boards on the floor. To have a clean change during service, keep double.
The more you buy, the less you pay: 4 packs -5%, 6 -7%, 8 -10%, on the same item. The discount applies automatically in the basket.
White or black
White is the colour that shows a honey or a jam most clearly, and against the wood of a board it stands out without clashing. The black square dish has the same side, so the two sit next to each other and stack. Containers for bar garnishes are in the garnish trays and condiment holders category.
At home
For a Saturday night cheese board, the square dishes keep the honey and the jams in a row along the edge, with no jars on the table. After dinner, six stacked dishes take one corner of the dishwasher rack.
