The martini glass in two lines

This is the traditional V cone, 17 x 11 x 11cm, holding 170ml, in packs of twelve. A hundred and seventy millilitres is the contained size of this shape, and it is the choice that makes it usable rather than only theatrical.

Who it is for

For a bar with volume that wants the shape the guest recognises. The V cone is the icon of mixed drinks, the one on every sign and every illustrated menu: part of the trade orders a Martini and expects that glass, and serving it in a different bowl calls for an explanation there is not always time to give at the bar.

The cone: its merits and its faults, all of them

The merit is recognition, and in a general venue that should not be underrated. The faults are two and they are structural. The first is surface: the V opens upwards, so the liquid exposes the largest possible surface to the air for a given volume, and a drink without ice warms fast. The second is balance: the straight wall pushes the liquid towards the rim at every change of direction, which is why the cone is the shape that spills most. Choosing it in a contained size like 170ml limits both problems, because less liquid means less surface and less inertia.

Choose the martini glass if

You have volume and the trade expects the cone. If the service is signature and the guest trusts your choice, a Nick and Nora keeps the drink cold longer and reaches the table with no drips on the tray.

Twelve pieces: why this shape earns the large pack

Because it is the shape that breaks most. The cone has a wide surface on a thin stem, so it is the least stable glass on the bar: it tips on the tray, it knocks the others in the dishwasher basket and it chips on the rim easily. On a model used up at that rate the large pack is not a hypothetical saving, it is the stock that stops you running out halfway through service.

Care

Dishwasher with the load well spaced, which matters more on this shape than on any other: two cones touching during the cycle almost always chip. Chilling the bowl before service makes up in part for the main fault of the shape.

FAQ

Does the martini glass spill easily? It is the shape that spills most of the three, because of the straight wall. The contained size limits the problem.

Why a pack of twelve? Because the cone is the bowl that breaks most often: the stock is genuinely needed.

Does it keep the drink cold? Less than a Nick and Nora: the V exposes the largest surface to the air.

How much fits in it? A stirred Martini finishes at around 90ml, which fills it to a good half.

How tall is it? Seventeen centimetres, on an eleven centimetre base.

Why is it less stable than the others? Because the straight wall pushes the liquid towards the rim and the centre of gravity stays high.

The more you buy, the less you pay: 4 packs -5%, 6 -7%, 8 -10%, on the same item.
