The Leonardo cobbler shaker in two lines
The Leonardo is a 500ml three-piece cobbler shaker from the hand-engraved line: body, built-in strainer and cap, with the tapered shape of the Japanese school and a pattern worked into the steel one piece at a time. It is sized for a single drink.
Who it is for
For bartenders who make the drink away from the station. The cobbler is the only one of the three shaker families that works on its own, because the strainer is inside it: it can go to a table, on a trolley or into a dining room with no separate strainer. A hand-engraved cobbler is that tool, in the version worth showing up close.
Why the engraving makes sense on a cobbler
Because it is the shaker that spends longest held up high. A Boston is kept low and opened with a knock; a cobbler stays at shoulder height for the whole shake, in front of the bartender’s face and in the guest’s line of sight. On the Leonardo the engraving sits where it is actually seen, not on a tool that spends the night under the bar top.

500ml, one drink
It is the size for a single serve with plenty of ice: the liquid stays below the rim and the cubes have room to move, which is what chills the drink. For two drinks at once you need a larger capacity, and the family has bigger sizes. For a shaker used on the floor, though, the small size is right for another reason too: full, it weighs less, and the movement in front of the guest stays controlled.
When the cap sticks
This is a trait of every cobbler and has nothing to do with the quality of the piece: as you shake, the liquid chills, the metal contracts and the cap tightens on the strainer. Do not pull it or lever it. Warm the top with your hand for a moment and it gives. On the Leonardo, a compact size, it happens less than on a 900ml cobbler, because there is less cold mass.
The built-in strainer, and when it is not enough
The grid under the cap holds back cubes and large pieces, but its holes are wider than a Hawthorne strainer’s: with muddled mint, pulp or ice shards, something gets through. For a clear glass, hold a fine strainer over it as you pour. That is the fine strain (double strain), and it applies to any cobbler.
How long to shake a cobbler
Less than a pair of tins, because there is less mass to chill and the metal touches the liquid across three pieces instead of two. The guide is not a fixed time but the wall of the shaker: when the outside is too cold to keep your hand on, the drink is ready. Bartenders coming from the Boston tend to shake too long, and the cocktail comes out diluted without anyone knowing why.
Care
Take the three pieces apart, wash with a mild detergent and dry before putting it back together: water trapped between strainer and cap is what leaves a mark over time. Hand wash only.
The more you buy, the less you pay: 4 pieces -5%, 6 -7%, 8 -10%, on the same item.
FAQ
How much does the Leonardo cobbler shaker hold? 500ml, the size for one cocktail with its ice.
Do I need a strainer? No, the strainer is built in. For a fine strain, add a fine strainer over the glass.
Does the engraving wear off? No, it is worked into the metal, not a coating applied on top.
Can it go in the dishwasher? Wash it by hand: the supplier’s sheets are not consistent on this point, and hand washing keeps the engraving at its best.
Can I use it at the table? Yes, that is the advantage of the family: no other tool is needed to strain.
The other cobblers are compared in the cocktail shaker category.
