The Hobstar highball glass in two lines
The Hobstar is a tall 480ml glass with the star cut typical of early 1900s glassware, in packs of twelve. It is a generous format, past the collins band, made for long drinks and for bars that serve a lot of them.
Who it is for
For a bar with volume that counts breakages in. Twelve pieces are not a reserve for the cupboard: they are the quantity that covers a service without leaving you short halfway through the night, and it is the purchase you make once a model has joined the working set and is no longer on trial.
Breakage is a cost line
In a busy venue the average life of a glass is measured in months, and tall glasses break more than low ones: they are less stable on the tray, they knock each other in the dishwasher basket and their rim is more exposed. Buying twelve means the replacement is in the store instead of finding out mid service that three are left. On a characterised piece like this one the problem is more serious than on a plain glass, because the substitution shows from the next table.

Choose the Hobstar if
You have a volume service, the bar is lit and you want a recognisable period piece. If you are still trying the model out, or the room runs very low lights, look at the packs of six and the fluted cuts first.
Six or twelve pieces
Twelve if this is the glass you serve your long drinks in. Break two in a night and the replacement is already in the store, and you do not have to finish the service with a different model in hand. Six are enough to try it, or to keep it alongside your main glass.
Care
Dishwasher. The star cut has deep corners that hold residue more than a plain wall: with sweet drinks it is worth rinsing before the cycle, or the sugar sets in the bottom of the cut. Watch the basket load, which on tall glasses is the first cause of chipping.
The cost per glass, worth checking on the price list
Large packs are assumed to bring the price per glass down, and that is not always so: it depends on the line and on the moment. Before buying twelve it is worth doing the division and comparing it with the same line in a pack of six. If the saving is not there, the reason for the large pack still stands, but it is a different one: having the replacement ready for a characterised model that cannot be swapped for another.
FAQ
What is a hobstar cut? A cut star pattern, typical of early 1900s glassware, repeated along the wall.
Does the Hobstar work in a low lit room? Less than others: a deep cut works by refraction and needs light falling on it.
How much ice fits? A whole block plus cubes to close, which is the correct fill for a long drink.
Are the Hobstar highball and the Hobstar old fashioned the same line? Yes, the same star cut in two formats: a tall 480ml and a low 350ml.
How large is it against the others? Four hundred and eighty millilitres puts it in the generous band, above the collins.
The more you buy, the less you pay: 4 packs -5%, 6 -7%, 8 -10%, on the same item.
