Who it is for
For anyone serving shaken drinks up who wants a coupe that is neither tiny nor overblown. A sour, a daiquiri, a drink with egg white: those finish between 100 and 140ml, and in a 240ml coupe they fill a little over half, which is the right proportion for the drink to look full without threatening to go over at the waiter’s first step.
Why the coupe came back
For twenty years the V cone ruled, then bars went back to the coupe, and not out of nostalgia. The wide but rounded mouth opens the aromatics towards the drinker, and on a shaken drink with citrus or egg white the aroma is half the drink. The curve of the base then gathers the liquid instead of pushing it towards the rim the way the straight wall of a cone does: for the same movement a coupe spills less than a V, even though it spills more than a Nick and Nora. The vintage engraving on this line is no accident, because the coupe is by definition a period shape.

Take the Opera coupe if
Most of your drinks served up are shaken and you want one size that suits nearly all of them. For stirred martinis, which finish around 90ml, a 150 or 160ml coupe holds the cold far longer.
Chilling the coupe: the thing that changes most
It is the gesture that separates a careful service from an approximate one, and it costs ten seconds. The glass goes in the freezer, or it gets filled with ice and water while the drink is made and emptied just before pouring. In a glass with no ice in it, the temperature of the glass is the only reserve of cold the cocktail has: pouring into a room temperature coupe means losing two or three degrees in the first minute, and on a short drink you feel all of it.
Care
Dishwasher without clouding, as with all Luxion. The engraving wants a rinse before the cycle when you have been working with egg white or thick syrups, because protein residue and sugar set into the relief. Watch the rack: stemmed glasses break at the stem.
