On a one litre jug the two properties of polycarbonate count double. The first is weight: a litre of liquid already weighs a kilo, and a glass body would add as much again, which makes the carafe awkward to pour one-handed. The second is impact: a full carafe going over is the kind of accident that closes off part of a terrace for ten minutes. Polycarbonate stays as clear as glass, so you keep sight of the contents, and on a flavoured water with fruit in it the contents are half the product.

You serve at table or outdoors and you want a litre that is easy to handle. For careful indoor service, where the jug is part of the presentation, a glass carafe still looks better and does not scratch.

The drawback, said plainly

Polycarbonate scratches, and a scratched jug loses clarity. On a carafe washed a hundred times a season with sponges and industrial detergents, the clouding comes sooner than you would think, and at that point the clarity advantage has been spent. You extend its life by keeping abrasive sponges away, using mild detergent and not loading it against cutlery and metal parts, which are what scratch it.

A litre of flavoured water

That is the right amount to make in one go: citrus slices, cucumber, mint or ginger left to infuse in the fridge for a couple of hours, then served cold over ice. In a litre the flavour spreads properly without taking over, and the clear body shows the fruit inside, which is what tells the guest somebody took care before they taste anything.

Care

Dishwasher with mild detergent and no abrasive sponges. Load it away from cutlery and metal items, which are the main cause of scratches. Normal drying: polycarbonate minds limescale less than glass does, but the marks build up.
