They are two different plastics, and you can see and feel the difference. Polycarbonate is clear and imitates glass; polypropylene is opaque, here milk white, and does not try to. In return polypropylene is lighter, cheaper, and does not suffer from scratches that cloud it, because it is not clear to begin with. If the drink needs to be seen, choose clear; if only the job counts, white costs less and ages better.

When opaque is an advantage

It looks like a drawback and in some settings it is not. An opaque tumbler hides smears, limescale and signs of use, which on event stock washed in a hurry, sometimes outdoors, cannot be avoided: a marked clear glass shows, a white one does not. It also hides the level of the drink, which on a free-flow service cuts the requests for top-ups. It is a practical choice, which is why milk white is the catering standard.

The life of an event stock

Outdoor stock is not lost to breakage but to dispersal: cups left on tables, taken home, thrown away by mistake. Unbreakable does not remove the problem, it moves it. That is why on these sizes an inexpensive model that is always available beats a nicer one that is hard to reorder.

Single-use or reusable

At an event the real choice is between single-use and reusable. The Rock Juice costs more than a disposable cup at the first purchase and much less by the tenth evening, and it removes the disposal of hundreds of cups. Operators who run events regularly pay back the stock in a few outings.

Care

Dishwasher safe with a mild detergent. Polypropylene takes high temperatures, but very hot cycles repeated over time can slightly warp the rim: if the machine has a gentle programme for plastics, use it. Stack when dry.
