The Boston shaker tin set in two lines
This is the two-tin Boston shaker sold already matched: the 28oz large tin, or mixing tin, and the 20oz small tin, also called the half tin, both in 18/10 stainless steel. It is the minimum kit for shaking, and on its own it covers almost every shaken cocktail.
Who it is for
For anyone who wants to start well on a small budget. A Boston tin set has no parts that wear out and stays the same for years. It is also the right choice to equip a bar school or a training station, where you need many identical sets and nobody wants to pay for finishes.
Two tins instead of three pieces
This is the whole difference from a cobbler. The cobbler has a built-in strainer and a cap, so it is one object and simpler for a beginner; but it is three pieces to take apart, rinse and put back together for every drink, and the cap sticks in the cold. The tin set opens with one strike, rinses in two seconds and has nothing that can jam. In return it needs a separate strainer, because it has none of its own.

Specifications
- Set: 28oz tin and 20oz small tin
- Material: 18/10 stainless steel
- Use: tin-on-tin shaking
- Strainer: none built in, use a separate strainer
How it seals and how it opens
The small tin goes into the large one at an angle, and the angle is what creates the seal: two tins pushed in straight do not close. In the cold the metal contracts and the grip tightens, which is why at the end of the shake they feel welded together. Open them with a strike of the palm where the rims are closest, never by pulling or twisting, which bends them for good.
What goes with it
A hawthorne strainer for the first strain and a fine strainer if you fine strain, a jigger to measure and a bar spoon. With these four tools you can make everything on a normal drinks list, and the Boston tin set is the centre of that kit.
How many sets you need
One is not enough for any bar that is really working. The tin needs a rinse after every drink, and with one set you either stop at the sink every time or shake in a tin still wet from the last cocktail. Two or three sets are the minimum for an hour of peak service, which is why this set is bought several at a time: it is made to be multiplied.
The more you buy, the less you pay: 4 pieces -5%, 6 -7%, 8 -10%, on the same item.
Care
Rinse straight away and dry by hand to keep limescale marks off; there is no plating, so nothing else is needed. Keep the rims round: use a muddler and an ice bag rather than the tins to crack ice, and pair the large tin with a small tin or a pint glass rather than a glass mixing glass, which is thinner.
