The Opera whisky decanter in two lines
A 750ml decanter in lead-free Luxion crystal, 189mm tall, with the cut work of the Opera line.
Who it is for
For anyone serving whisky from a decanter or running tastings. It is the piece that replaces the original bottle on the table, and it decides how the spirit is presented.
Lead-free crystal, and why it counts here
Traditional crystal contains lead, and that is what gives it weight and brilliance. In a container where a spirit sits for weeks, lead is a known problem, which is why lead-free Luxion crystal exists: the same brilliance and the same result on the cut work, without that component. On a whisky decanter, which is built to hold alcohol for a long time, that matters more than anything else about it.

Seven hundred and fifty millilitres, which is a whole bottle
It is the size that lets you decant with nothing left over: open a 700 or 750ml bottle and it all goes in. A smaller format would leave a heel in the original bottle, which is exactly what decanting was meant to avoid; a larger one would leave the spirit in contact with more air. The Opera whisky decanter is sized on what is actually on the shelf.
What happens to a decanted spirit
Nothing, if the closure holds and you get through it at a normal rate. A high strength spirit is stable and does not fear light the way wine does, but it does fear evaporation: a stopper that seals badly drops the level and raises oxidation over months. The working rule is to decant what you will finish in a few weeks, not the whole back bar.
One kilo, which is a service figure
That is empty. Full it comes to nearly two, and that changes how you pour: a heavy decanter gets held in two hands, or rested on the table and tipped, rather than lifted at arm’s length like a light bottle. On table service it wants a rehearsal, because the wrong move with a crystal piece in front of a guest costs more than the decanter.
When it is worth it and when it is not
Worth it when whisky is served from a decanter or when you run tastings, which is to say when the bottle reaches the table. Not worth it for keeping bitters and preparations in small volumes, which want much smaller bottles, and not worth it on a rare spirit, where the original label is part of what you are serving.
Care
Hand wash in warm water, never the dishwasher: heat and commercial detergents cloud crystal, and on cut work the film shows straight away. Dry with a lint-free cloth, and store it with the stopper resting rather than pushed home when it is empty, so the inside breathes.
