On an old fashioned glass the facets catch the light in a compact block. On a tall glass the same cut spreads over fifteen centimetres, so the effect is less concentrated and more continuous: the colour of the drink repeats on the edges of every facet from base to rim. It works best on drinks of a single, strong colour, such as a Cuba Libre or a long Americano, while on a two-layer cocktail the cut breaks up the layers. The rule of light applies here too: facets work by refraction and need a light source to hit them, so in a very dark room they give back less than they promise.

You serve single-colour long drinks and your bar is well lit. For layered or heavily garnished cocktails, a plain or lightly fluted glass leaves more room for the drink and does not compete with the work in it.

360ml: how much ice fits

A whole collins spear plus the spirit and mixer, or cubes to the rim. The rule that sounds backwards applies: filling up with ice dilutes less, not more, because a larger cold mass warms more slowly and gives off less water. On a long drink held for twenty minutes the difference is clear, and skimping on ice is the quickest way to water one down.

The right ice for a tall glass

The spear is the shape made for this glass. A large cube will not go into a tall, narrow glass, and small cubes pile up at the bottom leaving the top of the column empty: the drink looks thin and waters down fast, because many small pieces expose far more surface than one block of the same volume. A spear goes straight down, fills the glass in height and gives off less water.

Care

Facets hold more residue than a smooth wall; it is the only cost of the decoration. With sweet drinks, rinse before the wash cycle, so the sugar does not dry into the corners of the cut.

Does the Melodia suit layered cocktails? Less than a plain glass: the cut breaks up the layers. On single-colour drinks it shows at its best.

Does it need particular lighting? Yes, the facets work by refraction: on a lit bar they give their best, in half-light they go flat.

Is it the same as the Melodia old fashioned? Same cut, different size: that one is short for classic short drinks, this one tall for long drinks.

Does the cut work on clear drinks? Much less than on amber ones: a clear drink gives the facets little colour to multiply.
