The pipe glass in two lines

The pipe glass is a 100 millilitre piece in clear borosilicate glass, blown by hand, shaped like a tobacco pipe: the bowl is the cup and a long glass tube is the stem. It is sold as a decorative item.

The shape of the pipe glass

The design is a classic pipe remade in glass. The bowl, where the tobacco would go, is the cup; from there runs the stem, a long, slightly bent glass tube that reaches away from the body.

The pipe glass takes up space in width more than in height, with the stem standing out to the side.

Where the pipe glass goes

Its place is the speakeasy, the hotel bar with a cigar lounge, the 1920s-themed venue or the club with a library. On the back-bar shelves, next to the whiskies and aged spirits, it says more about the style of the venue than a sign would.

For a detective-themed night or a Victorian-inspired event, a few pipe glasses on the tables work as props. On photo and video sets the profile is recognisable even against the light, and the clear glass lets the room behind it show through.

For collectors and as a gift

For collectors of barware or of pipes it is a piece they will not already have. As a gift for Father’s Day, or for someone with a study and a spirits corner, it sits well on a shelf or a desk.

Hand-blown borosilicate glass

The pipe glass is made from clear borosilicate glass, blown by hand. It is the glass of lampwork, the technique that draws glass into thin threads, curves and details that ordinary tableware glass cannot hold. Blown by hand also means each piece has small differences in its curves and thickness: two pieces side by side are not identical to the millimetre, and that is the mark of the work.

Clear glass works with the light behind it. In front of a backlit back bar or under a display spotlight the outline lights up at the edges; on a black background, in a photo, it becomes a drawing.

Where the pipe glass is displayed

The pipe glass belongs to the family of decorative glasses in hand-blown glass. Its place is the back bar, the window display, the centrepiece, the set: whoever fits out a venue or an event puts it where it is seen.

For a display with several identical pieces the site’s rule applies. The more you buy, the less you pay: 4 pieces -5%, on the same item. The discount applies automatically in the basket.

Care

Hold it by the bowl and stand it with the stem free, without letting the stem bear weight against other objects. A dry microfibre cloth is enough for dust.
