The pufferfish glass in two lines
The pufferfish glass is a stemmed piece in clear borosilicate glass, blown by hand, with the bowl shaped like a puffed-up pufferfish, raised spines and a glass straw. It stands on a stem with a foot. It is sold as a decorative item, for window displays, back bars, sets and events.
The shape of the pufferfish glass
The bowl is the body of the fish: a puffed sphere, with glass points standing out all over the surface like the spines the animal raises to defend itself. Below is a stem with a foot, which lifts the fish and makes it look suspended in water. The glass straw comes out of the opening at the top and completes the piece.
The spines are the first detail you notice and the one that works with the light: every point catches a reflection, and under a spotlight the pufferfish glass lights up in many places at once.
Where the pufferfish glass goes
In a window display and on the back bar it reads from a distance, because a spiked sphere is not mistaken for a bottle. For an ocean-themed night, a pool party or a summer event, a row of pufferfish on the back bar sets the scene.
On photo and video sets the pufferfish glass works on a blue or black background, with a raking light that brings out the spines. As a centrepiece it holds a whole table on its own. For corporate events or product launches with a sea theme, it is a prop that people remember.
For collectors and as a gift
Among novelty glasses it is one of the most recognisable. For collectors of barware or glass animals it is a gift they will not already have, displayed with the straw in place.

Hand-blown borosilicate glass
The pufferfish glass is made from clear borosilicate glass, blown by hand. It is the glass of lampwork, the technique that draws glass into thin threads, curves and details that ordinary tableware glass cannot hold. Blown by hand also means each piece has small differences in its curves and thickness: two pieces side by side are not identical to the millimetre, and that is the mark of the work.
Clear glass works with the light behind it. In front of a backlit back bar or under a display spotlight the outline lights up at the edges; on a black background, in a photo, it becomes a drawing.
Where the pufferfish glass is displayed
The pufferfish glass belongs to the family of decorative glasses in hand-blown glass. Its place is the back bar, the window display, the centrepiece, the set: whoever fits out a venue or an event puts it where it is seen.
For a display with several identical pieces the site’s rule applies. The more you buy, the less you pay: 4 pieces -5%, on the same item. The discount applies automatically in the basket.
Care
Lift it by the stem without squeezing the spines; slide the straw out and set it aside when you move the piece. A dry microfibre cloth is enough for dust.
