How the black conical nut bowls are made
The black conical bowl in the Friendly range by APS stands 4cm high and 6cm wide, with a capacity of 50ml. It is moulded in post-consumer recycled PET, it is stackable and it washes in the dishwasher. The pack is of 6.
Which venues they suit
The cocktail bar and the hotel bar that serve on dark tops, black trays and slate boards, and do not want white tableware breaking the line. Black disappears under the contents: on the table the guest sees the almonds, not the container.
The conical shape is the narrowest in the range for the same capacity. On a 60cm table with two drinks, the water and the napkin holder, 6cm of diameter is the space that is left. And the 4cm wall keeps the nuts inside when the waiter sets it down in a hurry.

What to serve in black nut bowls
As a guide to use, 50ml is a single portion: toasted almonds, cashews, small olives, shaved chocolate beside a spirit. Black brings out pale colours, so it does more for nuts and white sauces than for black olives, which get lost against the dark base.
Venues that serve spirits neat use it as a fixed accompaniment: one glass, one bowl, one coaster. It is a serve that repeats the same way on every ticket, and the 50ml portion keeps a check on how much product leaves the kitchen in an evening.

What they are made from
The material APS declares for the Friendly collection is post-consumer recycled PET, recyclable at the end of its life. It is a rigid plastic, lighter than porcelain and thick melamine. On a full tray the difference is felt at the wrist, and on the floor more so: a bowl that falls does not shatter. It is picked up and goes back to the wash.
For a venue that means two things. First, an upturned tray does not close a gangway between tables for five minutes. Second, replacement: small tableware is the first to go missing, and here the APS code stays the same in the catalogue, so the same shape is reordered and the shelf never ends up with two different sets.
Care
They go in the dishwasher, as declared by the manufacturer, in the rack with the glasses. Not in the microwave: APS rules it out, and the bowl is not for heating. They stack: after the wash the six in a pack become one pile, which sits on the back bar shelf beside the coasters without taking a whole shelf.
The pack of 6
They are sold in packs of six bowls, with the price for the pack. To work out how many are needed, start from the seats: one bowl for every two seats covers the round, and a second identical set covers the dishwasher cycle.
The more you buy, the less you pay: 4 packs -5%, 6 -7%, 8 -10%, on the same item. The discount applies automatically in the basket.
The black bowl and the white one
The two versions share the same shape and stack together. Some venues use them to tell the contents apart at a glance: whatever contains nuts goes in the white one, the rest in the black, or the other way round. It is a code the floor team learns in one shift. For bar garnishes there are the trays in the garnish trays and condiment holders category.
For buying at home
Beside a whisky or an amaro after dinner, the black conical bowl holds chocolate or nuts for one person. Six are enough for a full table, they stack in a drawer and they wash in the dishwasher.
