The hurricane glass in two lines
The Royal Leerdam hurricane is the tall waisted glass from the Specials Cocktails range: 440ml, with a bowl that opens out at the top like the glass of an oil lamp, which is where the name comes from, and a short knopped stem. The glass is very clear, as the maker describes it. The pack holds six glasses, and that is the unit the supplier sells it in.
Who it is for
For the bar with tropical drinks and frozen serves on the list: the Hurricane, the Pina Colada, the Singapore Sling and the Scorpion are the four Royal Leerdam names for this glass. For beach bars and poolside bars, where the long drink with crushed ice and fruit on the rim is what sells most. The distributor describes it as an all-round stemmed glass, good for every cocktail and for ice cream too, and at the counter of a bar that also does coffee it is the evening ice cream glass.
At home it is the summer party glass, the one that makes a Pina Colada recognisable from across the room.

Why the hurricane glass has that shape
The tall bowl, narrow at the waist, holds a lot of crushed ice and a lot of liquid without the drink looking like a soft drink. Four hundred and forty millilitres is the size of tiki and tropical drinks, which start from 60 to 80ml of spirits and reach the rim with juices, syrups and ice. The mouth that opens out at the top leaves room for the garnish: the pineapple slice, the cherry, the leaves, the umbrella.
The short knopped stem keeps the hand away from the ice without lifting the glass too high, so it stays steady on a tray and on a table outside. That is the difference from long stemmed glasses, which with 440ml inside carry their weight high.

Six glasses a pack
Royal Leerdam sells the hurricane glass in boxes of six, and so do we. A bar with tropical drinks on the list keeps two or three packs for the season, because crushed ice and outdoor trays break more of them than usual.
How it is served
Fill the glass with crushed ice before pouring, so the drink chills on the way down. A blended Pina Colada is poured straight in; the Hurricane and the Singapore Sling are shaken and strained onto fresh ice. The straw goes in before the garnish, which stays on the rim and does not sink.
Care
Rinse straight away, before the sugar in the syrups dries on the glass, and dry with a microfibre cloth. Royal Leerdam does not state the dishwasher for this glass: by hand, with warm water and mild detergent, the tall bowl takes none of the knocks from the other glasses.
