The wooden tamper stand in two lines
This is the stand the tamper rests on between one coffee and the next: 58mm inner diameter, 65mm outer rim, for tampers up to 58mm. It keeps the base raised off the counter and gives the tamper a fixed place.
Who it is for
For baristas who have the tamper in hand all day and do not want to go looking for it. It looks like the most unnecessary accessory on the coffee station and it is not: a tamper laid flat on the counter picks up spilt grounds and carries them into the basket at the next tamp, where they make an uneven bed and a coffee unlike the others.
The tamper base needs to stay clean and raised
That surface is the only piece of equipment that touches the ground coffee before extraction, and every grain stuck to it ends up in the next cup. A wooden tamper stand solves this in the simplest way possible: the base stays in the air, the rim holds the tamper by its edge, and putting it down becomes automatic. You see the difference at the end of service, when the counter is dirty everywhere except where it matters.

58mm: the number to check first
The stand takes tampers up to 58mm, the professional standard size. A 53mm tamper still fits, sitting lower in the recess, while anything larger than 58mm does not go in. It is the only fit to check, and you check it on the tamper you already own, not on the machine.
Wood or steel
Wood suits a warm-toned counter and a coffee bar with a craft feel, and it makes no noise when the tamper goes down. In return it wants cleaning dry or with a barely damp cloth, dried straight away: wood left wet swells and in time splits. If everything goes in the dishwasher at the end of the shift, choose the steel version of the same shape.
Choose the wooden tamper stand if
The counter is on show and the look matters, the tamper currently lives wherever it lands, or you are fitting out a complete coffee station and want every piece to have its place. It is the cheapest accessory on the coffee station and one of those used most times a day.
Where to keep it
Next to the grinder, on the side of the tamping hand, and away from the steam wand: wood kept in constant steam darkens and eventually splits. A wooden tamper stand kept in a dry spot lasts as long as the counter, and that is the only thing it asks in return for its looks.
