Tiki Mugs

Tiki mugs are the only glassware the guest photographs before drinking. Here they are bought one at a time, not by the case: that changes how you order them and what a breakage costs on the shift. It is worth knowing why before the first order.

Tiki mugs are bought one at a time, and that changes everything

On every other glassware shelf you buy by the case: six glasses, twelve, four. Not here. Sixteen of the eighteen lines are sold singly, and a tiki mug costs many times what a tumbler does. That is not a mark-up: it is glazed ceramic, often hand painted, made in small runs.

The real risk is not the price, it is the mismatch

Most venues buy two or three tiki mugs to try, the drink works, and six months later they need more. By then the design may be gone, because on runs this small it happens. You end up with four different mugs for the same cocktail on the list, and either you change the serve or different tables get the drink in different vessels.

Restocking here depends on small production runs. If a mug is the signature of a drink on your list, buy more than you need today.

Replacements barely exist here

With other glassware, a breakage means reordering the same line at a small cost. A broken tiki mug is not replaced so easily, and sometimes not at all, because the design has ended. Venues that keep a tiki serve on the list usually buy one spare and keep it in the stockroom.

Why ceramic and not glass

Ceramic insulates, so crushed ice holds inside and the hand does not warm the drink through the wall. It is the opposite of the copper Moscow Mule mug, which conducts and frosts over. Ceramic is also opaque: it hides the colour and the level, and in a serve where half the effect is the surprise, that counts.

The trade-off is that painted pieces are hand wash only. An industrial dishwasher dulls the glaze and fades the colours for good, and on a mug at this price that is a straight loss.

It costs many times a glass. Does it pay?

It depends on one thing: whether the drink you serve in it justifies a higher menu price. A Mai Tai in a carved mug sells for more than one in a tumbler, and the difference covers the cost of the vessel within a few dozen serves. If the mug sits on a shelf for show, it is decoration.

The question to ask before buying is how often that drink goes out in a week. Under ten serves, one mug and one drink that earns it.

If you need it for a date

Here more than anywhere, ask first. Runs are small and restocking is not immediate. If you need a quantity for an event, message us on WhatsApp: we tell you what is on the shelf and when the rest arrives.

Where to go next

For the cold of metal there are the copper mule mugs. Crushed ice is worked with the muddler and the ice accessories, and tropical drinks are built in the shaker.

Frequently asked questions

Why does a tiki mug cost so much more than a glass?

It is glazed ceramic, often hand painted and made in small runs, and it is sold singly rather than by the case. The price of each mug is on its product page. It pays only if the drink you serve in it carries a higher menu price.

How many mugs should I buy?

More than you need today, if the mug is the signature of a drink on your list. Runs are small and restocking is not guaranteed: buy two to try and you may not find the design again in six months, and end up serving the same cocktail in different mugs.

Can tiki mugs go in the dishwasher?

Painted ones cannot. Industrial cycles dull the glaze and fade the colours, and the damage is permanent. Hand washing protects the mug, which is also why tiki mugs are not high-volume glassware.

Why ceramic and not glass?

Ceramic insulates. Crushed ice holds inside without the hand warming the drink through the wall, the opposite of copper, which conducts. It is also opaque, so it hides colour and level, and in a theatrical serve the surprise is part of the drink.

How do you choose between a moai, a skull and a barrel?

Choose by the drink, not by the collection. The moai is the icon of the genre and works with any tropical cocktail, the skull suits tequila and mezcal drinks, and the barrel points to aged rum. With only one tiki drink on the list, take the moai.
