The hammered julep cup in two lines

The Bars hammered julep cup holds 450ml and is made from AISI 304 stainless steel, in the shape the manufacturer calls Arabica: wide at the bottom, narrow at the waist and open again towards the rim, like a tulip. The surface is hammered into small dimples and mirror polished. It weighs about 300g and measures about 10cm across by 11cm tall.

Who it is for

For cocktail bars serving the Mint Julep, the Smash, the rum julep and every drink built on crushed ice, and wanting a vessel with presence. The hammering catches the light at a hundred points, and with frost on it the cup becomes what the guest photographs. In a tiki bar or a venue with a Middle Eastern fit-out, it is the piece that holds the menu’s story together.

At home it is the summer Mint Julep cup, the one that frosts over as soon as the crushed ice goes in.

Why the hammered julep cup frosts over

The Mint Julep is served in metal for a precise reason: crushed ice takes the metal below zero, moisture in the air freezes on the wall and the cup turns white with frost. Glass does not do this. Stainless steel does the job of the silver in historic julep cups, without tarnishing. The hammering increases the outer surface, so the frost forms sooner and shows more, because every dimple catches it differently.

The narrow waist helps the grip too: the cup is held by the rim or the base, where the hand does not warm the ice, and it does not slip when wet.

Sold singly, counted on the menu

The hammered julep cup is sold singly, and a bar with the Mint Julep on the list keeps as many as leave the bar in an hour of service, plus a few at the sink: usually six or eight. The code is in the manufacturer’s catalogue, so a cup that walks off the bar can be replaced with the same one, with the same hammering.

How to serve in the hammered julep cup

Gently press the mint leaves with the sugar in the bottom, add the bourbon and fill with crushed ice to form a dome above the rim. Stir with the bar spoon until the metal frosts, top with more crushed ice and garnish with a sprig of mint. The short straw goes next to the mint, so the nose picks it up with every sip.

The hammered julep cup and the others

If you prefer the classic straight line, look at the smooth Deco julep cup, same capacity and same steel. The other shapes are in the julep cup category.

The more you buy, the less you pay: 4 pieces -5%, 6 -7%, 8 -10%, on the same item.

Care

Wash in hot water with a mild detergent and dry straight away with a cloth, working into the dimples of the hammering so they stay bright. A soft sponge keeps the mirror finish.
