The Moscow Mule cup in two lines

The Bars Moscow Mule cup in stainless steel is a 450ml mug, mirror polished, with a steel handle. It is the large size of the mule mug: 100ml more than the 350ml version, and all of it goes to ice. The pack holds three mugs, the unit the manufacturer sells it in.

Who it is for

For cocktail bars serving the Moscow Mule over crushed ice, and its relatives: the Kentucky Mule, the Mexican Mule, the Dark ‘n’ Stormy. For terraces and hotel bars, where metal does not break if it hits the floor. For venues with alcohol-free long drinks built on ginger beer that want to serve them in the same mug, without a second line of glassware. When the bar is full the mug is filled, served and back at the sink with the rest of the steel: there is no patina to protect.

At home it is the mug for a Sunday Mule, with frost on the wall as at the bar and ice that lasts to the final sip.

Mirror-polished stainless steel: the wall frosts as soon as the ice goes in.
Why a Moscow Mule cup in stainless steel, and in 450ml

A metal mug exists for the cold: metal carries the temperature of the ice to the wall, the wall frosts over, and the drink is recognisable at the table before the first sip. Copper does this, but asks for two kinds of care: an inner lining, because bare copper reacts with the acid in lime, and polishing, because it darkens in the air. Stainless steel asks for neither. It is washed like the shakers and jiggers, and after a season it is still the same colour.

450ml changes the serve at one precise point. In the 350ml mug the spec with 45ml of vodka, lime and ginger beer comes to the rim with cubed ice. With crushed ice, which takes up more room and melts sooner, the same spec leaves little margin in the smaller mug. In the 450ml mug the crushed ice comes up to the rim, all the ginger beer goes in, and there is still room for the lime wedge and the sprig of mint.

Three mugs to a pack

The Bars sells this Moscow Mule cup in boxes of three, and so do we. Three mugs are one round for a table; a list with the Mule as a feature wants a dozen, four packs, and the mugs all arrive identical. The code is in the manufacturer’s catalogue, so a mug that walks off the bar can be replaced with the same one.

The more you buy, the less you pay: 4 packs -5%, 6 -7%, 8 -10%, on the same item. The discount applies automatically in the basket.

The Moscow Mule in the 450ml mug

Fill the mug with crushed ice to the rim, add the vodka and lime juice, top with ginger beer and give it a quick turn with the bar spoon. A lime wedge on the rim, and serve straight away, when the frost has just appeared on the wall. That frost is the sign the drink is as cold as it should be.

Choose the 450ml mug if

You serve the Mule over crushed ice, or want a longer drink in the same mug. If you work with cubed ice and the classic spec, the 350ml mule mug is enough. If you prefer a matt finish, which does not show fingerprints, there is the 450ml vintage mug. The copper mugs are in the rest of the Moscow Mule category.

Care

Hot water and a mild detergent, then dry straight away with a cloth: that keeps the mirror finish free of limescale marks. A soft sponge is all it needs.
