The Deco julep cup in brief
The Bars Deco julep cup is the classic Mint Julep shape: a smooth body that flares slightly towards the lip, a beaded band just under the rim and another on the stepped foot. It is mirror-polished AISI 304 stainless steel and holds 450ml. The Bars calls it the Deco Julep Mug Flat, where flat means a plain body with no pattern.
Who it is for
Cocktail bars with a Mint Julep on the menu that want to serve it in the cup the guest expects. It is the outline of the silver julep cups of nineteenth-century American bars, and on the bar counter it announces the drink before it arrives. In a speakeasy or a hotel bar it sits with the rest of the cocktail silverware. It works the same way for the Smash, the Cobbler and any drink built on crushed ice.
At home it is the cup for Derby day, and for summer afternoons with bourbon and mint.

The shape of the Deco julep cup, and what it does
A smooth, straight body frosts best: the frost from the crushed ice spreads evenly over the whole wall, and the cup turns white in a few seconds. The stepped foot lifts the cup off the bar top and keeps the hand away from the base, where the ice is packed tightest. The flare towards the top leaves room for the dome of crushed ice and the sprig of mint, which needs to sit close to the nose.
AISI 304 stainless steel does the job of silver without tarnishing and without polishing: the cup comes back to the bar looking as it did on the first day.

How many Deco julep cups to keep
The Deco julep cup is sold individually. A Mint Julep has to reach the table cold, so the bar keeps a few in the fridge, ready to go: six or eight cups cover a service with the julep on the menu. The Bars keeps it in its catalogue, so a cup that gets dented or goes missing can be replaced with an identical one.
How to serve in the Deco julep cup
Mint and sugar in the base, pressed just enough to release the oil without shredding the leaves. Then the bourbon, then crushed ice to the rim. Stir with the bar spoon until the wall is covered in frost, top with a dome of crushed ice and garnish with mint. Carry the cup by the foot so the frost stays intact.
The Deco julep cup and the others
For a more theatrical shape there is the hammered julep cup, same capacity and same steel, with a beaten surface and a narrow waist. The other shapes are in the julep cup category.
The more you buy, the less you pay: 4 pieces -5%, 6 -7%, 8 -10%, on the same item.
Care
Hot water and mild detergent, then dry straight away with a soft cloth, running it along the beading where water collects. Use a soft sponge on the mirror-polished steel, never a scourer.
