The Manawa tiki mug in two lines
The Manawa tiki mug holds 500 millilitres in hand painted ceramic, 15 centimetres tall, 8 wide and with a 7 centimetre opening. It is the largest capacity in the family, and also the one with the narrowest mouth in proportion.
Who it is for
For anyone with long tiki drinks on the list. Zombie, Scorpion, Navy Grog and the recipes built on three or four different rums carry volumes that will not fit in a 400ml mug: half a litre of capacity allows plenty of ice and the full measure without squeezing either.
Tall and narrow: what follows
Fifteen centimetres of height with a seven centimetre opening makes a slim proportion, and there are two consequences. The first is in its favour: the tall column shows off layering and a garnish built upwards, and the narrow mouth slows the crushed ice because it exposes less surface to the air. The second is practical: your hand goes in with difficulty, so packing the ice and cleaning take a little more care than in a wide mouthed mug. It is the usual trade with tall vessels.

Take the Manawa tiki mug if
If you have Zombies and long tiki drinks on the list. For tiki drinks of medium length, such as a Mai Tai, the 400ml from the same family is the right size and takes up less room on the shelf.
Half a litre and how the drink is built
With 500ml of volume and the crushed ice packed up to the dome, the actual liquid sits around 220 to 250ml, which is exactly the length of a Zombie served properly. The rule about ice matters most at this size: a larger cold mass warms up more slowly, so a long tiki drink in a mug full of crushed ice holds to the last, while the same drink with little ice turns into sweet water halfway down.
The straw, which here really is needed
In a tall mug packed with crushed ice, drinking from the rim means getting only ice. The straw reaches the bottom and brings the liquid up, and that is why tiki drinks have always been served with a straw: it is not a summer flourish, it is the only way to drink something built under a dome of fine ice.
The Zombie and its proportions
It is the drink a half litre mug exists for. The Zombie combines three different rums, juices and syrups, and in the original recipe it runs past 200ml of liquid: in a 400ml mug, with the crushed ice packed as it should be, it does not fit. The Manawa is sized for that kind of recipe, and it is why a serious tiki section has at least one half litre format.
Care
Hand wash with a neutral soap. With a seven centimetre opening your hand does not go in comfortably: a long handled brush is the right tool, above all at the bottom, where syrups and fruit pulp collect. Dry completely, because in a tall mug the moisture stays a long time.
FAQ
Is the Manawa the largest mug in the family? Yes, at 500ml against the 400ml standard size.
How much liquid fits? Around 220 to 250ml, because half the volume is crushed ice.
Is it easy to clean? Less so than the wide mouthed mugs: it wants a long handled brush.
Is it right for a Mai Tai? It works, but for drinks of medium length the 400ml is better proportioned.
Is a straw needed? Yes, in a tall mug packed with crushed ice it is the only way to reach the liquid at the bottom.
Does it have to be crushed ice? Tiki recipes assume it and count its dilution in the measures.
The more you buy, the less you pay: 4 pieces -5%, 6 -7%, 8 -10%, on the same item.
