The matt coffee tamper in two lines
The Easy matt tamper is a professional stainless steel tamper with a 53mm flat base, 9.5cm tall and weighing 250g. It compresses the grounds in the basket to build the right resistance to the water, which is the condition for coffee that comes out aromatic and with crema.
Who it is for
For anyone with a 53mm basket. It is the first check to make and nothing else counts before it: a tamper is not a universal tool, and this model is built for portafilters of that size, common on many compact and domestic machines.
Five millimetres decide the coffee
Between 53 and the 58mm professional standard there are five millimetres that look like nothing and change everything. A tamper narrower than the basket leaves a ring of uncompressed grounds around the edge, and the water, which always takes the path of least resistance, opens a channel right there: the result is coffee that runs fast, pale, watery on one side and bitter on the other. The fault is invisible looking at the bed, it shows in the cup, and it is why the diameter wants checking before any other feature.

Why the flat base
Flat, concave or convex is a choice the trade leaves to whoever is tamping, but the flat one gives the most even bed and forgives levelling errors least, so it teaches you to do it properly. Curved bases make up for rough distribution and for that reason suit people working at speed; on a bar chasing repeatability, flat stays the reference.
Choose the Easy matt tamper if
Your basket is 53mm and you prefer a tool that ages well without showing it. The matt finish scatters light instead of reflecting it, so it holds no fingerprints and hides the fine scratches any tamper picks up being set down and picked up again. If instead you want every trace of residue on the base to show at once, the polished version of the same range is stricter and easier to check at a glance.
The 250 grams and the movement
A quarter of a kilo is a weight that helps: part of the load is done by the tool and the hand only has to follow it, rather than pushing from a standstill. The correct movement is vertical, wrist rigid and the push coming from the shoulder, and it wants carrying on a tamping station rather than on the spouts of the portafilter. What counts more than the force is repeating it the same: two coffees tamped differently run at different rates even on the same grind.
FAQ
Does the Easy matt tamper suit 58mm baskets? No, the base is 53mm: on a 58 basket it would leave an uncompressed ring around the edge.
How much does it weigh? 250g, a weight that works with the tamp rather than leaving it all to the hand.
What is the difference from the polished version? The finish only: matt hides fingerprints and fine scratches, polished shows them.
Is the base flat or curved? Flat, which is the one that gives the most even bed.
How is it cleaned? A wipe with a dry cloth after service: never leave the base in contact with grounds that have fallen.
The more you buy, the less you pay: 4 pieces -5%, 6 -7%, 8 -10%, on the same item.
