The Skull Stone skull mug in two lines
The Skull Stone is a 500ml tiki mug in hand painted ceramic, shaped as a skull, with a white stone finish and dark hollows. It stands 12cm tall and 10cm wide, has an 8cm opening and weighs half a kilo. It belongs to the MAKATIKI range.
Who it is for
For bars with the long rum drinks of the tiki repertoire on the list, the ones that carry more than 200ml of liquid on top of the crushed ice. At 500ml the mug holds them without cutting the measures.
It also works for a themed night, Halloween first of all: a skull mug on the bar counter is seen before the drink, and the guest at the next table asks for one.
At home it is the mug to bring out for friends when a Zombie is made properly.
The skull mug and the stone finish
The surface reproduces a skull carved in rock: the off-white of the stone, raised cracks, eyes and nose hollowed out and picked out in black. The shadows do the visual work, not the colour. Under light from above every hollow turns into a clean shadow, which is why this subject reads better in the evening than by day.
Each piece is painted by hand, so the tone of the cracks and hollows varies slightly from one mug to the next.

Choose the Skull Stone if
You have long rum drinks on the list and need the half litre size. For mid-length drinks such as the Mai Tai, the 400ml size is better proportioned; for a smaller skull in warmer colours there is the 300ml wooden skull, in the same category.
500ml and crushed ice
In a tiki mug half the volume is ice. With crushed ice packed to the rim, the 500ml skull mug leaves around 220 to 250ml for the liquid: the length of a Zombie and of the three rum drinks, which do not fit a 400ml mug without taking out ice and changing the dilution. The 8cm opening leaves room for the garnish and the straw.
The skull on the drinks list
The skull belongs to the pirate strand of the tiki repertoire, the one of dark rums, barrels and cork stoppered bottles. On a list built on those references it tells the guest what is in the glass better than a Moai or a totem. A subject that matches the drink is a detail guests cannot always explain, but they notice it.
Care
Hand wash with a mild soap: hand painted ceramic does not go in the dishwasher. The raised cracks and hollows hold more residue than a smooth surface, so a soft bottle brush helps, above all where juice and syrup dry. Dry it completely before putting it away.
